Default Road Race Autocross??

How much wear and tear can I expect. I have been told new brakefluid is a must streetrack pads? What else? The car is my daily driver but would like to get out at Sebring and Homestead and do a little autocross and dragracing. Can an 01 Coupe handle the abuse?

Get some Motul RF600 fluid, have a dealership purge out all the stock brake fluid with a Tech II. Then get some good pads. If you're just starting out, try either stock Z06 pads, or maybe Hawk HP+ pads. If you have run-crap tires, toss 'em and get some decent rubber. Sebring is pretty brutal on brakes, haven't done Homestead yet so can't comment.

You WILL get hooked on this, its an absolute blast!

For your first time out I would say to just just check everything over, pad thickness, treaddepth, oil level. If you are naturally aggressive I would say to flush out the old fluid and go with something better. Our cars are awsome off the showroom floor. You wont be able to use all of its ability for a while. Try it out the if you like it, start swapping tires, suspension parts etc.. But you if your a driver you'll love it.
have fun

There's a big difference between autocrosses and tracking (or road racing). Autocrosses are short, quick spurts, rather violent affairs that don't really put too much heat into the car. Much more than on the street, but the stock C5 will handle it with no problem.

Tracking a car (typically Driver's Education events) run 20 minutes on a continuous course, is faster, not as darty (started to use the word "technical" but didn't want to get ), from turn to turn, and puts a lot more heat into the car. Engine, brakes, tranny, you name it.

Both are an absolute blast to get into.

Both will also wear out brakes, tires, and drivers!

Welcome to the club. Stop by the Autocross section, there's a sticky post that's got a ton of great info.

Have a good one,
Mike

The faster you push the worse it is on the car. It takes time to get fast so try it.

You don't need a tech II to flush your brake fluid, this is what I used when I switched to super blue and have done 2 days on a road course, I stayed with my stock pads since this was my first time and at the end of the second day I still had almost 1/2 my pads left.

While its not necessary, it really is a good idea, especially if the brake fluid is old. It doesn't need to be done every time, just the first time to get the stock junk out.

Picture this scenario - you've run a number of laps and your fluid is good and hot. You go into a braking zone a bit too hot and activate ABS. Your fluid temp is OK for the Motul, but too high for the stock crap. ABS unit fires, discharging the crap fluid into the system. Stock fluid boils, air in the lines, well you know the rest....

What type of brakefluid would you recommend to replace the stock brake fluid? I drive this car everyday too.

Do you think the old fluid stays in the ABS unit? because it doesn't, when you bleed the system you push fluid thru all of the lines and out the bleed port and when I switched to the blue fluid I just had to bleed until the fluid leaving the bleed port turned blue, I have since bled my brakes twice since the initial flush and have gotten blue fluid (no old stuff left in there)

My understanding is that the old fluid doesn't come out of the ABS unit unless its activated. Subdriver and DJWorm, two long-time racers, subscribe to this theory as well. Cheap insurance to have it purged w/ the TechII IMO.

Or bleed the brakes with the new fluid, afterwards drive the car hard enough to activate ABS, then bleed the brakes again.

From all the stories about dealerships breaking of wheel studs, wrecking customer cars and dropping cars off of lifts, I'd say it could cost as much as a failed lawsuit and a Vette. No thanks, I'll find a way to change it myself!

I can affirm the notion that the abs unit holds the old fluid. Someone at the race track this weekend said you could do it without the Tech II if you jack up the back and start the car. Just bump it in gear. The abs unit will immediately sense "wheel spin" and start spewing all the old fluid. I haven't tried this but they say it works. Might be dangerous if not properly blocked and supported.
