I was thumbing thru the new Summit Racing catalog and found an in-line filter setup that uses engine oil filters. Is this something that A4 users can benefit from or would it change line pressures and negatively effect the performance?
Wrong solution for the job. It'll work, but it's like putting a tourniquet on a papercut. Can anything get inside that tranny case? Nope. What wears out in there? Steel bit-n-pieces. That's why Formula 1 uses magnetic in-line filters. It doesn't restrict flow while doing everything a tranny filter should.
Magnefine makes a good inline magnetic & low restriction media trans filter.I 've used one for years & never had a problem. Its used by a lot of trans re-builders,& I know Ford puts them on all their factory re-builds.& now they do make a 3/8 one to fit our A4 C5's.The cleaner the fluid is the better the trans performs,so I believe it would be beneficial to the performance.
I got some letters on this subject from a few automotive engineers ,& yes the filter set up that uses a spin on oil filters ,in their oppinion was thought to be too restrictive. One or more of them told me about the Magnefine.Just punch in "Magnefine Auto Transmission Filters" & you'll easily find info on the filters.

Probably a good idea. It's hard to get all the crud out of an A/T that's been cooked to death.
