question about cats
I have LG motorsports Long tubes that go through an X pipe through the cats then straight pipes with tips.
Pa state law says I have to have the factory cats in place for a visual check.
My question is if I knock the guts out of the cats and leave just the shell what happens?
I did this with another vette I had with a L98 and it fell on its face doe to no backpressure...will thsi happen with the LS1?

We gutted a the cats on a friends spare mid pipe dyno'd before and after, and gained 6 hp. Saw no loss of low end torque. This was on a 99 A4, mild bolt-ons only. Smelled bad, wouldn't pass smog. Not worth it IMHO.

I don't understand what you want to do.
As I read it, you have the LG cats on the car now. You say it might not pass visual because they aren't the original cats.
So you want to take your stock cats and gut them (why?) ...and then do what with them? Integrate them into your LG midpipe?
If going through all that just to pass....take your stock midpipe (and cats), adapt them to the collector flange of the headers (lose the LG X-pipe for the time being), go pass your inspection, then return to what you have now. It will take a little fabrication work, sure, but it shouldn't be that difficult.
Or, just lower your car so much they can't see under it.

I think its just a waste of time and energy personally..as far as smell I have heard it both ways...I would just buy some High flow cats....if they are only doing a visual inspection I guess if you had the time you could install them for the inspection then get rid of them and go without like Y2K said above
