I had LPE install the tub kit in my little blue vette and have been very pleased. The linners in the wheel wells look like origional equipment.
While I did my own tubbing for around $35.00 in fiberglass mat and resin, it still doesn't look as clean as the LPE car that I saw up in Bowling Green because I wasn't able to get the carpeting to fit as well as I would have liked due to the roll bar, the carpeting being preformed around the wheel wells and now the wheel wells being closer together but one day I'll let someone redo the carpeting in the rear hatch area to clean it up a bit.
People who develop new products like to make a profit. Although it does seem expensive, the fact that there are not a bunch of knock offs on the market should make a statement that nobody is making a killing on these. The top not fitting is the deal killer to me not the price.
Thanks for the comments, and members are right, that we do not make a ton of money on these, but we do make a little on each set, and that is helping us recover our initial investment to have everything produced.
As for the top mount, we actually made stands at first that raised the plastic mount for the top, up above the tubs, allowing us to still mount the top. The problem with this was that your top is now a projectile aimed right at the back of your head!!!!! in the event of a front end collision, the top could come loose and cause serious injury. We made the decision to discontinue the part, before it caused someone some serious pain. I know it's a little inconvenient to leave the top at home,
but considering the alternative, I wouldn't want to take a chance.
Appreciate the detailed responses, Ed. I too have considered your kit but the top stowage issue was a definite deal breaker. Why not revisit this issue by looking at what was done on the C6? Perhaps a modified version of the design would fit the bill. Apparently, GM has designed a mount for the top that is safe, secure and clears the tubs.
I noticed that when I got tubbed and the 345's were stuck on that people have a great tendancy to let you go first when your sitting at a light. The only bad thing about the 345's is the financial assistance I will need when they have to be replaced. The other thing I like about being tubbed and fitted with the correct wheels is that they fit and look like they belong there.
Loosing the ability to store the top is not a big deal for me. I simply take it off before I leave.
How about a GP for just the shock limiters and brackets? THis should be rather easy to do and I bet more people would be buying that. How about just get an order for 5-10 kits like that? Alot of people are doing the tubbing themselves and really only need those few parts, so I bet there would be good interest.
