Default Cam question

In my 04Z I am thinking about a cam only with hedderes and tuning. Thinking at least 224/228 under .600 lift. I like to hear and feel the cam, kind of like one of the old 396/ 375 HP chevys. I want to hear in some detail about your experience and driving impressions. Like to hear more about Carteck and East Coast Super Charging. I know they are both great. Thanks

O.K. thanks, with my ls6 heads and add a 2x cam with hedders and intake and tuning, I should be there. So give me your street driving impressions after the work was done. Also how long did they have your car? How does the 2x cam sound ? Slightly notice it or real obvious ?

Hi Chris, I sat and talked to you at Carlisle and then we were looking at some leather interior parts. Thanks for the tee shirt. I am still thinking about this. Mainly it is time constraints for me. I will give you a call next week. Thanks Skip

Default Aggressive sound

The good sounds from the cars of the 60's/70's comes from the long duration exhaust lobe. The long duration causes the valve to open sooner in the cycle when the cylinder pressure is higher.
To get that sound, try an exhaust lobe of at least 230 degrees, i.e. a 224/230, 228/234, etc.
Of course the type of muffler you have will influence the sound and long tube or at least mid length headers would be necessary!

You're likely to beat my numbers because of your heads.
Driving impression:
cam a little lopey but not objectionable. I don't stall at lights, but it takes getting used to applying a little more throttle at take off.
Very smooth on the street and at WOT it is still smooth. I think because of the torque being consistent across the rpm range I didn't get the head snap I expected. BUT the performance is there. On entrance ramps at 40 mph I give it 3/4 throttle and the car sprinted to 85 in seconds. Before I looked at my speedo, I figured I was doing maybe 60ish. Wow what a difference!
My gas mileage is down 5% at best probably due to having my foot on the firewall! On the highway driving home last night I averaged 32 mpg cruising in 6th at 75 mph.

Time Spent:
Cartek did the LT headers, off road x pipe, cam, underdrive pulley, spark plugs, new springs and retainers in about 4 hrs with a 2 man team. Dyno took another hour or so. I pulled in Thurs. am and drove home Thurs pm.

I've heard good things about ECS. I'm sure they are great tuners as well, just don't have personal experience to tell you about.

Sound:
Borla Stingers are MUCH louder, not to the point of obnoxious, but close to it. The lope of the cam is evident, but I love the sound of it.
At WOT it screams enough to make people doing 70 mph look over!

I am really pleased with this last mod and am satiated atleast until the Spring when I get the new heads.

Thanks you guys for the detailed posts. With well thought out answers to my questions. I really care more for real street performance than the little bit of track I may do. Because of distance to their shops Cartek and East Coast Super Chargers Are likely my two possible choices. Nice to know the things I want done can really be done in a day or two and be done well. I have heard all good things about both shops. Some other great ones around but not at all easy for me to get to. Skip. Anyone else ??
