Tick, Tick, Tick sound coming form under the engine?
I have a 2002 6 speed coupe that recently had a trans rebuild and a new cluch installed.
It seems that after I had this work done, I have a tick, tick sound coming from directly under the engine near the fire wall, I think!
Was this noise always present? I'm not sure! I'm in tune with my car after the trans issue, so now I hear every noise. I think this one isn't supposed to be there! The noise can really only be heard with the windows down or if I'm outside the car.
The noise can be heard only when the car is at a stand still after the car has warmed up. When the cars warmed up the RPMs have fallen to the 750 rpm level which is the area on the tach that the tick noise can be heard,
It seems to be RPM related. If I hit the gas pedal, the noise speeds up and then kinda goes away! Or it may be that the engine noise covers up the tick noise.
I really think the noise just speeds up and becomes more rapid in nature.
The noise happens with the clutch in or out. I don't think it has anything to do with the torque tube rattle us 6 speed cars seem to have.
What could this tick, tick sound be? Again, it speeds up and goes away if I hit the gas pedal, but returns as soon as the rpms fall below 1000 RPM!
Thanks!
I just don't want to break down somewhere and really don't want to bring it back to the dealer if at all possible.
You don't list what mods if any you have on your car, but if it has headers I would be inclined to think that the headers are loose. headers are a pain when doing a clutch install, at best you have to loosen and move them, worst case they have to be removed to get the new clutch in because the long tubes wrap around the bell housing. So it sounds like the classic "header tick" to me. Take a 10mm socket and small torque wrench. 18ft lbs is the spec, but just snug is good. Also make sure that the header gasket was reinstalled.
If you don't have headers, you might want to try tightening up around the stock manifolds and cats regardless.
I do not have headers. Just a blackwing and Corsa exhaust cat back. Is it possible that they removed or loosened the manifolds when they replaced the clutch/trans.
The tick sound sounds more mechanical, but I'm not sure! I tried to play around with it last night and the noise does speed up when I hit the gas pedal. Could it be the pup converter section that I'm pretty sure did come apart when they did the clutch?

Mine was tick, tick, tick..........
now 2 months later, thanks to the extended warranty and a buddy of mine at the local Chevy dearler I'm breaking in a Brand new Engine from the factory and only paid my deductible $200.
1500 mile and counting................
i have a similar tick but ive almost certainly tracked it to my collectors of my LT headers where the exhaust gas merges causing the problem. I have no exhaust leaks but a very similar problem. It does seem like its in the clutch area though so who really knows.
Sewing machine noise, I'd say injectors. A ticking sound that gets softer after the engine warms up, exhaust leak. A louder ticking at one section of the engine point to piston slap.
My engine started going tick, tick, tick, yesterday while driving on a skid pad. It'd would stop ticking after it sat still for a while. I added a quart of oil and the ticking did not come back.

Oh! Watch that. LS1s are know for loosing oil pressure after pulling hard g loads for longer periods of time.
