Default Header install question

I'm getting ready to install long tube headers and have been advised by several folks that the motor mounts may have to be un-bolted and the engine lifted, so my question is...can you jack the engine up from underneath? if so where do you place the jack? I have a drive-on lift, but I'm trying to figure out how to lift engine. Thanks! Greg

Jacking your engine a few inches is no big deal.

Reach to the back of the intake manifold with an index finger to get an appreciation of how much distance you have between it and the firewall and the area underneath the windshield.

Loosen the airbridge from the accordion coupler and seperate the two. The discrepancy in height, between these two, while you are jacking will give you an indication as to just how far the engine is up.

Loosen both BOTTOM motor mount bolts, the ones under the car, to the last threads. Do not completely remove the bolts.

Place a block of wood between the oil pan and the lifting portion of your jack.

Jack slowly and test after each pump to see if you have enough height.

A 2X4 is sometimes useful. Placed on its edge in the engine bay it can be used to pry or move the engine slightly to one side or another.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO GO FAR. A few pumps should do it, you only need a few inches. The 2x4 prying to one side is what really creates the needed space. A few things will tell you how high up you are. The "step" between the disconnected air bridge and the accordion air coupler. And the decrease in space between the back of the intake manifold and the firewall, bottom of the intake area which you can gauge with a finger, screwdriver, or one guy even used a piece of cardboard.

What kind of Headers??? Not all require that the engine be jacked over.

My FLP's didn't require jacking but when I swapped clutches, I placed a jackstand with wood under the oil pan like the photo.

Thanks EB20003 and Patches, this was what I was looking for!

I'm installing headers from Lingenfelter (although B&B makes them)
