I'm putting in 3.42 diff on my a4. Do I have to drop the torque tube and tranny to get the diff out? and if I were to take the tranny out, does the torque tube need to be dropped from the flywheel? thanks!!

I watched the whole process on my car, and took a lot of pix.

The torque tube doesn't need to come off, and the tranny doesn't have to come out. If you drop the exhaust and torque tube cover, you can lower the transaxle enough to unbolt the diff and slide it off the tranny output shaft. You just can't drop it down too far because the motor might hit the firewall.
