I am thinking of adding a transmission cooler to keep my fluid temps under 200. Looking at B&M Hi Tech, which has a fan that comes on at 160. What are you guys running? Also, will adding the cooler in addition to the one in the stock A4 radiator help keep coolant temps lower? I know the trans fluid and engine coolant are two separate entities and run through different parts of the radiator, but I thought one might help the other. I'm really more interested in transmission temps. Maybe a BeCool radiator would do both.
HD Radiator + trans cooler here. 1-3/8" radiator is 33% bigger than stock. The trans cooler is a Setrab unit, Sweedish brand. furnished and installed by A&A Corvette with great results.
BTW you will never keep trans temps below 200 degrees in the twisties in third gear, on a warm day. Best,
I just put a Hayden HD 26,000 on mine, mounted it in front of the
radiator. Bypass the radiator and go only thru the trans cooler.
Dropped my temps down to 160 on 90 degree days. Cost about
$60. to install.
I have a low temp thermostat and lowered the temp my fans turn on, and have never seen over 200 degrees unless I'm hot lapping(round robin) at the track. Even in traffic. This is with a 4000 stall converter.
Any preferences with transmission coolers? I know of B&M, Hayden and Tru-Cool. Which one is best and why? All those coolers are universal too right? Thanks.
I have the stock radiator with FLP trans and a vig 2400 stall, I'm running the fluid thru both the radiator and a B&M 18,000 GVW aux cooler, this setup is great on the street and drag strip but while running a DE event I noticed while keeping the shidter in third my tranny temps never went higher than 228 and as soon as I shifted into Drive they shot right up to 245 and climbed up to 260 before I backed out of it.
Right now I'm planning on running a second aux cooler to see if that helps, an A4 tranny is great for drag racing but they eally suck on the road course

Why would the temps be higher in Drive. Isn't the tranny working harder in Third. And why are your temps so high with the cooler?

He might not have had a big enough cooler for the type of driving he was doing. 18,000GVM is for light towing and medium duty driving. Running a road course is quite a bit more than that. Thats flogging the transmission. Especially on a hot day.
Also, when my tranny went down, I remember the concern with flushing the transmission cooler to insure that no debris had made it into it, potentially clogging it .

Same here. Hayden # 1405 Heavy duty driving, trucks, class "A" motor homes, and serious towing, GVW to 26,000 lbs. In series with my radiator. I also have a 170* stat and my fans are set to come on at the appropriate temps for it.

Keeps my temps in the 169* range. 180* is high for me. I am very satisfied with it.
If you are going to on your transmission, then don't mess around. By all means get a big enough cooler.
Dirt cheap. I paid about $65-$75 for the cooler at a local Pep Boys auto store, took it to my installer who installed it with my TC and gears. Charged me 1hrs labor charge for installing it.
Cheap insurance. Andy could probably install it for you in no time.
There is nothing fancy about a transmission cooler. They are usually used in RVs and on SUVs that the typical vacationer uses for towing his compact car or something heavier, like a large boat, behind. The transmission fluid travels the circuit and the cooling fins of the cooler do the job in cooling it down.
I doubt you'll have a warranty problem if you have a transmission cooler installed. A good transmission shop can install it too.

Ok...you have convinced me. I will talk to Andy tomarrow and check Pepboys for the Hayden#1405 cooler.
We will see (hopefully) whats going on with my tranny in the morning. I threw that code 3 times today!! But just reset it while driving. Car runs great.....wierd
