I'm in the market for a C5 and find myself torn between getting the 6spd. or auto. I have driven both and much prefer the M6 for 'fun to drive' factor. But I'm concerned the M6 will not take the abuse I have planned for it. This will be a weekend car that will see the drag strip a lot. Fully built motor is already being machined and 1000hp turbo set-up is in the works. Just looking for the right super clean,no rust AZ car in silver. The question is simply can the M6 be made to hold 850+ft/lbs? If not the next question is what do you have to do to the A4 to make it handle that kind of power? Thanks.

Thats a no brainer, get the auto. Especially since you said it is going to be a weekend drag car. Of course you WILL need a built A4 to handle that kind of power.
Just go to the track and see what the other people in that class run. I'd bet you will see more autos.
As far as building an auto tranny, contact FLP, the seem to be well respected around here.
how about a 3 speed auto with a clutch, no converter.
this might be a out dated setup. It was hot some years ago.
big launch with 2 shifts no clutch needed.

Wow!!!! I haven't seen that setup since the 70s. I think they called it Clutch Flite back in the day. I'm sure it is now out of date.
