Pop off the shift pattern cap. Look down inside and you'll see what looks like a silver "key". Most folks find using two screw drivers on either side of the key and working it up to be the best way. If it seems to not want to come out try spraying some WD40 in/around it. At some point grabbing it with a vice grips may help. Just be careful, if it pops out the heavy vice grips could go flying and cause damage. Once the "key" or pin is out the **** will unscrew.
Good luck.

PS: Many have called this pin the "demon key". As many have reported its a major PITA to remove.

but use one flat screwdriver. do it slow but controlled upward movement. Dont pop it off or else you just chip away at it.
