Default Exhaust Headers

In the January issue of Vette there are two articles about C5 exhaust upgrades. I've done Corsa Indy's, x-pipe, and Callaway Honker intake, so far, so good.

Why do long tube headers make more power than shorties, or stock? Also, on the theory that every mod has compromises, what are the negatives of headers? Heat, ground clearance, more noise inside at cruise?

I have a 2004 CE 6 speed vert I bought new this past spring, and I have put about 10,000 miles on it. The only negative that I've seen after my mods so far is the mileage seems to be a little lower, and every now and then it sounds like I have a little pre-ignition ping. On the other hand, the look, sound, and torque are much better.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Long tube headers have a better scavenging effect on your motor, vaccume effect. The LT's actually help pull the exhaust from the combustion chamber. The length of the collector on a LT header can be varied to change this effect for different applications, racing or drag strip use. The headers you purchase will be designed for the LS1 LS6 motor.
The shorties have the larger diameter tubes like the LT and they are better at getting the exhaust out of the engine but don't give you the effect of the LT.
The stockers are restrictive and help hold down the exhaust tone. These are the most restrictive but give you fewer head aches.
The problems with LT and shorties are few , maybe tighten the bolts once in a while or it's a little more trouble to change a clutch, install spark plugs or you might need a heat resistant cover on your spark plug wires but the header and exhaust system is one of the most important keys to making your hotrod breathe.

I wouldn't bother with shortys, get the long tubes. L/Ts will make your car louder especially after you do H/C.
