Submerged '04 Z06
I have a question for you guys that would know....
I'm considering buying an '04 Z06 with less than 4k miles on it that's in FLAWLESS condition.... except it apparently was flooded and the motor's shot. That's fine as I'm going to stroke it with a new block and heads. My question is, what other problems may I come into with flooding? Checked the fuse box and interior - DRY as a bone, no water stains or signs of interior water damage. No corrosion or saltwater stains, so I think it was just a freshwater puddle or something. If it hit a lake it would have damaged the bumper or at least something, and it's in perfect shape. Let me just say the price on this car is, well, just too good to pass up. I could sell a Corolla and have some extra cash to spend on it if you get me
Car has a lot of computers and electronics in it, I would be careful.
Unless this thing was like $10k or less I wouldn't even bother, you might be chasing little gremlins and electronic issues for the entire ownership of it.
An old saying, if it looks to good to be true then it probably is.
If it was such a great idea you have to wonder why the ones selling or others haven't caught wind of it yet and jumped on it for a project car.
There is no deal too good to walk away from IMO.
The only thing that creeps up with this stuff is electrical. That being said, either gut all wires and computers and start fresh or have it all checked over by a wiring guru. Its going to be the little things like grounds that will drive you crazy, but if the $ is right, that is all doable for low bucks. Have fun with it.
I'm with the others. Unless you're in this car right, be prepared for possible electrical problems later. I had a friend who did the same thing and ended up replacing the wiring harness for the engine and then the wiring harness in the car.
These guys are right about the electrical stuff. My buddies 01 Z06 took a hit on the drivers side front quarter. When he checked it out at the body shop they told him it had about 8 g's worth of damage, however they also stated that if it had been the other side with all the electrical and computer stuff, they car may have been totalled.
Sounds like you found something good! Again, just be ready for the worst if you do get the car. Remember a computer is located on the Pass. floorboard and just some water overflowing from the A/C drain hole there has caused major problems for some. Not saying it will happen, but can't be too careful! Good luck!!!
I've seen cars like that on ReadyToFix.com. Most don't run for various reasons. It maybe because there's no key availible or the engines hydrolocked or the computers are soaked. I be more inclined to find a recovered theft with the engine blown, since you're going to redo it, anyway. At least, you don't have to worry about electrical gremlins. Just MHO.
Unless you are prepared to redo the entire electrical systems I'd stay away from it. Otherwise you are likely to have all sorts of electrical gremlins pop up at the most inopportune times.

I wouldn't even consider it for an everyday car, or for a car just to tool around in. Your going to have problems. Thats probably why the guy is selling it in the first place. It would make a good racecar project, or something like that.

Thanks guys, it's actually in an insurance auction for dealers. I have a really close friend that found it and the pre-auction bid is only $6k. My friend has been a dealer for about 5 years now and he tells me the car should probably bring under 10-12k tomorrow at the final auction. I was considering it if it stays under that price.... as I would replace the motor anyway, and I would bet I could find all the wiring and electrical here on the forum second hand for pennies on the dollar. I'll keep you guys posted if it stays in that price range - I figure if I got it for $12k and put another $10k into it building the motor and replacing the wiring I'd be doing pretty good. We'll see tomorrow I guess!
Hell its an 04 z06 you could replace the whole electrical system with new for less than a new Z. The only thing that would suck is the title will say salvage and probably something about flood damage
