Default IDLE on 2001 Corvette ? for you all....

My 2001 Corvette with NO mods except predator idles at 500 rpms. I have a 99 that idles around 750 rpms. Idle is a little rough at 500 on my 01, is there ANY way to adjust what rpm I am idling at? Is there any adjustments I can make under the hood? ALSO, this weekend I am putting Magnaflow exhaust on car, will this raise my idle any?

THANKS,
Jamey

I guessing your 2001 has an A4 tranny and your '99 is an M6, right?

The factory DIS (Desired Idle Speed) for an automatic car is 550 rpm in gear and 650 rpm out of gear. The idle speed of M6 cars is set at 750 rpm.

No, there is no mechanical adjustment that can be made and no, your exhaust will have no effect on it. The only way to change the idle on these cars is by editing the PCM via editing software like HP Tuners or LS1-Edit.

You know, other than what trooper reccomended you might just want to check to see how dirty your throttle body is. I haven't serviced a corvette throttle unit yet so I don't know how dirty they get... Check that though.

Thats a pretty low idle. I'd look for a loose air bridge fitting somewhere as well as the dirty throttle body and such. Does the car surge during normal driving as wel?

you know what else, is that I've been finding the intake flex hose disconnected from the airbridge just above the radiator. Check for that too, it will look like it is on but try and move it around to see.

You didn't answer the question in my first post so I don't know for sure, but "assuming" the 2001 is an A4 car, the ~500 rpm idle (our tachs aren't particularly accurate) would be correct when the car is in gear.

BTW, the only air intake leaks that will affect your idle are post-MAF sensor as your motor will then be sucking in unmetered air. This usually causes a very rough idle and, depending upon how bad it is, your car may not idle at all.

Vacuum leaks will cause a high idle speed condition.

Good luck.

Then very likely there is nothing wrong with the idle. As I stated in my first post, the factory DIS of an A4 car is 550 rpm in gear and 650 rpm out of gear (Park and Neutral). I agree that these engine speeds are really too low and they make for a rough idle, but that's what GM set them at starting with the 1999 model year. Before '99, the idle speed was the same in the A4s as the M6s which is 750 rpm, but for some unknown reason they lowered it.

I have a 98 and the idle is around 550 in gear also. I wish I could get it up to 650 but no way unless an aftermkt reprogram. I had an idle update in 2000 and maybe GM lowered it down to 550. Maybe for emissions or something. I too would like to get it up higher?????? How is the 64000 $ question. Better make that a million . Is there a program that will just raise the idle only and nothing else?

My stock 98 auto also idled at 550 in gear. Around 600 in Park.
Since installing heads/cam, I raised the idle to 800 by computer reprogram. Nice and smooth.

Unless you have access to a computer reprogram, some head/cam guys raise their idle by drilling a small hole in the throttle body plate, lower half. They say it doesn't hurt. 1/8 drill bit seems to be the popular choice. However, I would persue going the computer route first.

Thanks for input. I tried that but it really didn't make that much difference . I agree the computer route is the best way. Most places want you to buy the whole program. I just want to modify the idle. If someone has an LS 1 edit that would be fine and if they know how to edit that one parameter. I don't know if this could be done or where.

THe low idle speed is for fuel econmy. The EPA driving cycle that measures fuel economy has a LARGE perctage of idle in it.Think about it you get zero mpg sitting at a red light. The lower the idle speed the less fuel you burn because you are controlling to the same A/F ratio.

I have a 02 vert. and had the same idle speeds 500/550 area. When I put the TC in we bumped the idle speed to 650. It runs real smooth at this speed.I did this via a custom tune with my predator.

Check out this website:

http://www.proautotech.com/

They are in Ft. Myers. 130 miles from you.

Maybe you have already called them. They should
be able to bump your idle for you. You might even consider doing a full tune. At least you would know your car is running at peak performance.

By the way, your new exhaust will not affect idle speed.
