Last weekend, I pulled off my Baer vanity rotors to be replaced by Napa $25 throw aways for the Las Vegas Open Track event. When I pulled off my rear rotors, the spring that holds on the emergency brake shoes came off. Now I can't get it back on no matter how hard I try. So I pulled them and left them off for the weekend. I couldn't spend too much time or I would have been stuck in Friday evening traffic leaving LA. No thank you.
My two questions are;
1) Is the retainer spring essential? and,
2) If so, then how do I get it back on without throwing tools in a fit of rage?
Unfortunately, the manual has no wisdom to ease your torture. You do need the spring retainer to hold the shoe in place. I would suspect that it would rattle around if you were to leave it off. It doesn't appear to be difficult to reassemble but you're certainly not the first to have this problem. Looks like patience and perseverence are your best tools here.
1.placed the retainer inside of the shoe.
2. attached it to the top mounting tab.
3. Created slight pressure (screw driver inserted between backing plate & shoe at the 11 o'clock position) to hold the clip in the top tab.
4. Then pry the bottom part of the clip into the bottom tab.
This sounds easy but it took me about 3-4 times to get it using this procedure and about 25 minutes of trying other things to figure out the key was pressure at the top of shoe to keep the retainer from falling out.
I would glady accept 3-4 minutes. Better than 3-4 hours. Thanks for the graphics and procedures. I'll give it a shot.
As far as the necessity of the spring, I drove to Vegas and back (800 miles) and haven't heard anything. I'll pull off the wheels and see if there is any damage.
