Default ticking / whining noise

Well it started when i turned down the radio a few weeks ago, it sounds kinda like a belt whine, but i checked the belts and they are in good shape, and nice and snug.

A few days later, I hear a ticking noise, after hearing the term piston slap, it makes me kinda worried, its likea nice firm ticking noise coming from the engine. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

I bought the car last month (oct. 15th) from rockenbach chevy in grayslake illinois... I have an extended general motors warr. on the car. Its a 2000 FRC.

Any help is much appeciated.

I had a similar chirping/whinnig sound when the engine was started. Mine turned out to be the belt tension pulley. GM changed it and it seems to be OK.
Good luck

Check the hose and clamp at the elbow going to the air filter - stopped the noise for me!

Piston Slap is more of a hammering sound than a ticking. It clears up after a few minutes (unless it a real bad case).

Ticking could also be a leaking header, or a valve noise.
