Default New DTC Code, need help!! 1281

I received a DTC code of C1281 this morning on the way to work - I've read what the code means - DTC C1281 Steering Sensor Uncorrelated Malfunction .

But what the heck is it and what's the fix?

I had a similar problem with my 01 Z06. The steering shaft has a sensor mounted right near the firewall that monitors steering shaft position. It uses the input for active handling, and probably some other things. I can't recall if it's the same code I had. My sensor was bad & a new one solved the problem. You have to drop the column to replace the sensor. Hope I could be of some help. SCOTT

I get that code all the time. It sets off my active handling when going straight. After I reset it my car immediatly goes to active handling warming up, then its fine. It only seems to happen when its cold out.

Thanks for the replies,,

My car doesn't have active handling, would it still trigger this DTC?

Duncan Electronics (division of BEI Technology) makes the steering sensor and the following links give a description of how system works:

I had this code. Whenever I was driving straight, the steering wheel would be off by a few degrees. A front end alignment solved the problem and straightened the steering wheel.
