I had a talk with Bob at Fichtner about this a few weeks ago and he told me he didn't think he could even get me one to try because of the tight supply chain on certain C6 parts for the time being.
I believe that the height of the shift **** is different than the C5, the **** height has been lowered with the new shift **** design. However, I don't think the C6 **** will fit on a C5 shifter assembly.
I also believe that there were some internal changes inside the transmission to give the shorter throws the C6 has. Not 100% certain.

From everything I've read you are correct. The major differences are internal and not the shifter. Even if you could make the C6 shifter fit you sould be disapointed.
