I bought a 97 about a month ago. Anyway, the other day I'm driving through a parking lot and hear a quiet grinding sound (one only a car lover would hear!). Thats not good, so I go home and jack the car up.
One of the bolts was gone on the drivers side front wheel bearing housing and the other two bolts had more than a 1/8 inch slop in them .
Please everyone check theirs, It was fixed with about a hour of work and a 3 dollar bolt, but if all three bolts would have come out and the wheel would have flown off, well I proubly would not be sitting here typing this.
Whoever did the brakes on that car, did a crappy job.
Changing the pads or rotors has nothing to do with the bearings. The only way anybody would have known was to inspect the hub bolts while they were in there. That typically isn't done.
Not sure the wheel would have come off all the way. The bearing is quite deep and sits in a pocket in the knuckle to which the brake caliper bracket is bolted. The caliper bracket and caliper would keep the rotor from moving to far out and that probably would keep the wheel on. However, the steering would definitely be weird.
