Default New Gear's ????

I have been reading about several members having ring gear problems or differential case fracture problems. Most of these problems occur after the install of an aftermarket gear of 3.90 or 4.10. There are companies out there claiming the Getrag Diff. case itself is weak or the way the Diff. mounts the trans and what happens durring wheel hop and axel windup is an issue, therefore a brace is in order.

Is it posible that the gear change has something to do with some of these problems. I have not attempted a gear change myself, but I am told it's a simple bolt in. There are no back lash settings? Or even need for a dial gauge like days of old. Is this true? In addition the ring gear on the Z06 cars is shot peened, are aftermarket gears? I wonder if GM was on to something. I am told that Getrag will not even make a case with a larger gear set up then 3.73.

Thoughts anyone???

The Getrag differential was designed to provide troublefree operation within the torque parameters of a stock Vette. I wouldn't expect long life when subjected to a large cube motor, slicks, and hard launches. Although, some folks have had success with hardened output shafts and external braces.

Some of the folks here are posting rear diff. failure, with no other mods other then a gear change. I think the hardened output shaft is a good idea. I don't know if the brace does anything

ECS installed a 4.10 gearset in my '04 Vert. I watched the process, and they were patient answering my questions. Doug used 2 special tools to disassemble the diff; a toothed spanner socket to remove the pinion from the gearcase, and a device to hold the pinion in the vise. The reassembly was a straightforward operation. He used white grease to check the contact pattern, and adjusted it with shims. The process was pretty much what I expected.

The gears made a major change in the car. It accelerates quicker, and 6th gear is now usable around town. It's a worthwhile mod, and I'd do it again.
