Default Help identify noise

I am noticing a slightly different noise from the drivetrain at highway speed cruising...let me see if i can describe this

- 50+mph highway speed, cruising i.e. throttle barely "on" just to keep car moving
-noise almost sounds like the sound tires make on cement pavement, not nearly as loud, but that pitch etc.
-take foot off gas, noise is gone
-press clutch in, noise is gone
-add any % more throttle, noise is gone

my clutch does not slip under WOT, so I cant imagine it being "gone"

what could this be? any advice is much appreciated

If your exhaust was louder, you wouldn't hear any noises.

Seriously, I have no idea, but hope you figure it out.

How many miles on the car? Could it be wheel bearing assemblies?

Its really annoying because when your cruising and you just want to touch the gas to maintain speed you hear that mechanical (whirr'ing) sound. I didn't even bother trying to take it to the dealer because its so faint and so specific as far as when it appears I figured it would be to hard to explain to dealer without getting a look, more annoying for me because I know its there and I'm almost always listening for it.
I can even find the exact point when it starts by pushing the throttle its such a specific point that you can make a controlled beat or cadence from the noise (hey you do crazy things when a noise is bothering you )

Yea, I am sure it is worse since "I know its there", but annoying nonetheless. I just dont remember it as noticeable...unless it was there and wrote it off as GY supercup tire noise (I have mx's for street now, and much more quiet)

I am still curious what "it" is, so maybe someone will chime in here who has diagnosed the problem further.

Maybe try changing the fluid and adding synth additive for the diff? That's one place noises can come from. Maybe have the tranny looked at. Or the clutch. What I'm getting at is based on your description it could be something in those areas.

Good luck. Hopefully it's nothing. But I know how annoying an unknown noise can be.

Cheers

Yea, I have amsoil in the tranny now...i dont think its that since its still really smooth etc....my diff could make some noise (tight turns, slight chatter)...I have some amsoil and friction modifier in my garage now, just waiting to go in...maybe I will finally get to it this weekend The last two diff fluid changed were done by the dealer since they replaced the seals (TWICE already!) in the last 8 months

I replied to you in the racing section... it's gear noise when the drive train is under load, when you breathe off the gas I'm sure it'll go away then come back when you ease back on the gas and put the system under a load again.

Wheel bearings will roar too... if you take the car out and slalom it back and forth and it goes away when you load the car on one side it's a bad wheel bearing. I had my RR go bad after hitting some rough pavement at 90 when commming back from CI-V. When I'd slalom the car to the left i'd quit making the noise.

Take her down the street and slalom the car back and forth, if it goes away when you're on one side, you've got a bearing going bad. It's all under warranty.

Ill check the bearing idea.

anyone else have any thoughts.

btw - anyone have the "how-to" pics for changing diff fluid? I want to make sure I know where/which is "fill" and "drain" mainly since I just want to put some more friction modifier in without draining everything.

It's simple, but you sould get a $5.00 fluid hand-pump. The fill plug needs a hex socket, but somone said a 3/8ths rachet fits in perfectly. Remove the fill plug before you take out the drain plug just in case. You don't want to drain the fluid then not be able to remove the fill plug. After that the drain plug is right on the bottom!

I drained it until it wouldn't come out any... then I closed up the bottom like w/ an oil drain plug (goodn' tight) Fill the rear w/ fluid until I starts to overflow, then close her up. The fill plug has a little ring gasket thingy on it so don't loose it. I'ts easy.

OK, I am finally getting aroudn to changing the diff oil today....I took her for another drive just to try to pin point the noise, and it is definitely coming from the reat of the car, and I am 90% sure from the diff...So I guess you can say this is gear whine. do you think the oil change will help?

Changing the diff fluid with the synth additive should help a bit. Is this a stock diff?

Yup, stock 3.42...i have had the seals replaced twice already in the thing...its not leaking anymore, but noisey (I think). Just drained and oil - wow does it smell! I have some nice amsoil to put in, so hopefully that will make a difference.

Dude... if it is the ring/pinion then take it to Labonte.... you have a nice warranty for a reason. It could be a few things... might be the wheel bearings too.
