Default Clunk in steering

Hey everyone. I have a 97 with 80K miles, And recently there is a "clunk" in the steering.

For example, If I am at a dead stop and I move the wheel left to right, there is a clunk you feel through the wheel. There seems to be no real free play in the steering.

Also driving goes from a very nice solid ride to out of the blue the car seem to want to start drifting.
The front end feels as if it is off the ground at times just dancing around.

At lower speeds on the roads around town the ride is gret, very tight and solid.
On the highway at speeds, it becomes very unstable.
I recently put brand new (well 2K miles on them) shocks from a 2002 Z06 on my C5.

I look forwards in advance in what I should look for. It is getting set for winter here and the Vette is garage bound so I have no plans on bringing the car to the dealer.

Also, the car has never been in an accident, incase anyone was wondering.

-Eric

sorry if my grammar and spelling is bad. It has been a long vodka tonic evening.

Check to 2 bolts that hold your steering rack to the crossmember. There is also some kind of nut behind it that you need to hold with a wrench. Its kind of tough to get the wrench behind there, but you'll get it. There is 1 bolt on the left, and one on the right. Make sure they are nice and tight.
