HI All, I am in the prcess of buying my first vette (2002). There was a noise I heard when test driving it, I don't know a lot about cars but the noise went away when I pushed in the clutch. I spoke to a mechanic who said it is likely the thorughout bearing or maybe a problem with the tranny. Then the sales guy took it to a GM mechanic who said they looked at it and the throughout bearing and clutch were fine, they said the noise was the alternator. Does this sound right? It was almost like a squeeling noise. Thanks
The C5 is known to have a noise referred to as "marbles in a can" (a little rattle from under the center console) when it is idling in neutral and the clutch in not engaged. It does go away when the clutch is engaged. If this is what you hear, then it is perfectly normal. Your mention of it going away when the clutch is pushed in, is why I mention this.
It is definitely not a squeal, however. If you really do hear a "squeal" it is something different, and should be fixed.

The C5 is a transaxle car. The transmission is in the rear. All that I have heard seem to have a throughout bearing type of noise that is NOT throughout bearing, but related to transmission noise, maybe torque tube noise as the torque tube rotates through the console when you have the clutch enaged and in neutral. It is generally believed that this trransmission/torque tube is the source of the marbles in a can noise. IMO, the transmission is the likely culprit and the torque tube its ally in making the noise easily heard. Anyway, its harmless and we all get to love it.
Sounds like it is most likely not an issue then. just want to make sure I am not buying a car with problems. Anyway, the GM mechanic said it was the alternator, they noticed it was draining the battery. they put in a new one and said the niose went away. So hopefully things are all set. Thank You for all your help.
