Can someone tell me in numbers what going from a 2.73 to a 3.42 is like. I guess what I am asking is what is your rpm at 70mph with the 3.42? Also is a torque converter switch neccessary when you swap the gear? Thanks!

I had 3.42s in my car, you will be at 2150 RPM at 70 MPH with 3.42 gears.
You don't have to swap converters, but I would strongly recommend that you do install a high stall T/C when you install your gears. A high stall T/C and gears are the best bang for the buck mods on an A4. Good Luck!!
Thanks Mitch. Any idea how much this should cost and where in chicago to get it done? I realize you are from florida, hopefully others have some ideas.

I paid $500.00 labor to install my gears and T/C. I can't help you with a good shop in Chicago.
What will the High Stall TC do for you? How is this different from the stock TC? Would you install this on a 3.15 RE A4

A high stall T/C allows your engine to instantly spool up higher in the power band where it is making a lot more power when you go WOT. The stock T/C stalls at 1600 RPM a 3000 stall T/C would stall at 3000. Your engine makes alot more power at 3000 RPM than it does at 1600 RPM.
Whether or not I would use 3.15 gears with a T/C depends on your plans for your car, and your T/C selection. I would use 3.15s with a small converter (2800-3200) with a high STR. I would want at least 3.42s if the T/C I selected was 3500 stall or greater.
I created a really cool excel file to calculate RPM vs tire size, gear ratio and even MN6, M12, and A4 transmissions...but I am not allowed to post attachments. Can someone do this for me? I'm sure it would be helpful. Thanks.

does anyone know how to get attachments privileges? Maybe I have to have more stars under my sig...
