Its when you take the cover off your intake, and zip tie the filter to the frame that the filter sits in. This leaves the filter exposed to the air. You might pick up a couple of extra horsepower for free. I doubt theres any risk. I just think it looks ugly.

Takes 10 minutes to do, doesn't really look THAT bad unless you have a show car. Its a good bandaid until you wanna dish out the money for an aftermarket setup. I had a AIRraid filter on my Z28 so I washed it and put it on the vette with the Zip tie. If I had to buy the K&N filter for it I'd probably spend the extra 140 and buy the stinger that is on a GP right now. I still might do that...

Also, regarding the K&N mentioned earlier, an individual did an independent test on his Miata and has shown that the K&N doesn't filter as well as a good paper filter does. He also found that the pressure drop difference between a K&N and a paper filter isn't that great, i.e. the HP gains can't be that great. Check it out at www.bobistheoilguy.com. Interesting read at least.
My Donaldson filter may be just as bad as the K&N, but it IS a different type of filter material and the company makes all sorts of air filtration products. Far more than K&N. My advice.....get a modified airbox cover with a paper filter or, better yet, a quality cold air intake, Blackwing being the minimum based on surface area, design, company experience, and ease of installation. Just MHO.
