Default 4L60E Problems...

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE. I hope you had a great time and that your NEW Year is fantastic too!!!

I need to pick your expert brains on the subject of automatic transmissions, specifically the 4L60E fitted to C5's.

My Vette is a 1997 A4 C5. It had 90,000 km (56,250 miles) on it when I took it to the dealer to have the transmission fluid and filter changed. In other words, I missed the service interval by 10,000 km (6,250 miles)!!!

After they changed the fluid and filter they commented that the fluid was so dirty that they expected that the tranny would fail after the service. They further said that this is a known problem and that they therefore recommend performing this service every 20,000 km ( 12,500 miles)!!! The car worked fine for a few days until the transmission just stopped moving the car. Basically no power was getting to the rear wheels. As you'd expect, engaging reverse moved her better than engaging drive. During this time the "reduced engine power" warning message appeared on the DIC.

So we dropped the tranny out of the car. The first thing we found is that the torque convertor is not original. It's numbers do not match the rest of the car. We do not know why this has been changed or by whom. FYI, I bought this car in June 2003 with about 80,000 km (50,000 miles) on her. We then opened up the tranny and found the manifold clogged with ceramic debris (the remains of the bands???).

So I need to find a source of a remanufactured / used tranny. Can anyone recommend somewhere???
Are any of you familiar with any service issues (like the dealer is claiming) with these tranny's???
Any ideas what could have really caused this problem???
Any idea why the torque convertor would have been changed???

FYI, the climate here is hot, dusty desert. I guess you could say similar to Texas!!! Oh yeah and the car is basically stock.

Any input really appreciated. I know that there's a hell of a lot of knowledge on this forum so look forward to leaning something of use...

Cheers,

Chris.

Rodney (Crashed94) here on the forum does rebuilds. From what the guy's here say, he is one of the best with transmissions. Do a search for his user name and send him a PM. You will be in good hands.

You need to talk to Rodney "Crashed 94" in my signature is his email I will also forward your post to him. These transmissions are know for low fluid issues and so if they do not get the right amount of fluid your 3-4 clutch packs will go and very quickly.
Good luck Kirby
