Unfortunately, there is no way to prime it. The oil pump is driven directly by the crankshaft and is directly behind the crank pulley inside the timing cover. Some guys have pulled the coil pack connectors and crancked it for 20 seconds or so. then started it. Hopefully it was assembled with lots of assembly lube and that will keep it lubed until it starts and the oil pickup fills.

Would it be better to pull the fuel pump fuse and then crack it over?

One would think so, but the fuel management will know there is no spark so it will limit the injectors to keep from flooding.

thanks for the help, will be putting this in 63 grand sport, trying to resolve problems before they happen. It really looks like we are going to have to accept this new engine, because of all that you can do with it. The guys that did my heads loved what they found in them, and bolt on horsepower is getting real easy. the new hot rod mag says that the new intake with the carb pulls out 530hp with cam change. that is hard to beat. can't wait to see what the new 427 can turn into.
AGAIN< THANKS

disable the fuel pump, you don't want any fuel getting into the cylinders until its time to actually start the engine, disconnect the the coil packs and remove them. Remove the valve covers and then with a fully charged battery crank the engine over for 10-15 seconds at a time until you see oil pumping out of the pushrods onto the rockers. This is the only way to be sure that everyhing is primed with oil, the lifters are pumped up and the engine is ready to start. The whole process should take a little over a hour if you are somewhat handy.

Actually there is a way to prime the oil system, you remove the oil gallery plug on the front left side of the motor and hook a line to it and pump oil until you see it come out of your pushrods.

Most people don't have the tools or fittings to do this so most people do like what was suggested above, keep the engine from firing and crank it a few times before you actually let it start.
