Default Second Column Lock Recall?

I had the Column Lock problem on my 2001 approx 2 year ago, dealer repaired as part of the recall. Now, I just received a Column Lock recall notice from GM. I called my dealer thinking they just didn't process appropriate paper work indicating they already performed the corrective recall. They checked and said the recall I now recieved is another recall, something about column lock programming modification. Anyone else know of this recall?

There was no recall for the 2001 M6's two years ago...Only certain 1997-2000 A4's and M6's fell under the 1st recall released in 2001...In other words, dealer could not perform a recall procedure on your vehicle at that time and that is why you are getting the present notice

Thanks for the quick response. My understanding was work they did was a so-called silent recall. They had the car two days, replaced parts, that I'm sure of. Is it possible they simply replaced my problem column lock with exact same parts/mechanism? I was of the impression they used a new mechansim type. Am I being naive?

I am curious as well...

I received a similar notice from GM a few months ago. I had my column lock service done in 03 as well. Not sure if my service guy messed the paper work too?

This is the recall that came out due to the NHTSA investigation. It was determined there were a few brain dead people who could start their cars and drive them a short distance before they realized the steering wheel couldn't turn if the column lock didn't unlock. The reprogramming just makes sure the reduced power mode is no power. The tech also checks the lock plate to make sure it doesn't interfere with the pin. On automatic cars the lock mechanism is removed.

I may have mis understood this recall at first.

Basically I just thought that they did a reprogram and now if the lock failed then your car wouldnt start. Is that still a correct statement?

This reprogramming recall for MN6s modifies the logic to handle a specific case where the car could be driven with a locked column due to low battery voltage and disabling fuel to the engine in that case.

The existing logic always did this - fuel is disabled if the CL status is incorrect and the car is driven above 3 MPH.

It does NOT prevent you from starting the car.
