Default High oil pressure. Any ideas?

I pulled into work this morning and noticed that my oil pressure needle was pegged out at 80 psi. I flipped to the page on my DIC and it said 129 psi. Car is running fine and there are no check engine warnings and all engine/oil/coolant temperatures seem to be normal. What could be causing this and if it really is running 129 psi what would be some of the symptoms to look for (besides exploding hoses and puddles of oil under the car)?

Oil pressure sensor. Mine did the same thing last March. Driving down the road and it pegs out at 129. Around here you can only get the part at the dealer plus 300.00 to put install it. If you are handy there is a good post in the help section on how to install it yourself. I drove mine for several months with a bad sensor until I had time to fix it.

I thought it may be the sensor since everything seems to be running fine. I just wanted to make sure there weren't other issues I should be looking for before I burned my engine up. Thanks for the info. I'll check out that help post.

Best way to really tell if its the sensor is to turn the key on but DO NOT start the engine. If your sensor is bad, you will get a pressure reading when the motor IS NOT running. It's about a $40 part. Replacement is relatively easy. Only pain is you have to loosen and move the intake manifold forward to get to the sensor. $300 labor should be illegal!!!!!!!!

I will try that this evening. If it's the sensor I'll be working on it this weekend. If not, it's headed to the shop.

This problem and diagnosis is covered in the Sticky in C5 General which links to the solution in our Tech Tips.

$80?? I thought (hope) it's closer to $40... I'd be pissed too if it only lasted a week!

No ... the part is around $20-25, (with a mechanic's discount) but I paid $80 for labor...not too bad considering the $300 Chevy charges right?

Also...the dealer mentioned that he had customers replacing their units that failed during big temperature changes.....I wonder if big drops in temperature make that thing fail....... That would be just insane...

Mine has gone bad too. Went out about 9 months ago. If its 300 bucks to get it fixed at the dealer, GM can go screw themselves.

I called a local Chevy dealer and they ask me if my unit has two legs or three legs! Are they interchangeable? BTW, the two legged one is $25 and the 3 legged one is $60.

There is one forum member who went thru this and replaced about 10 sensors before he got one that lasted, I believe GM changed sensors because of a bad design.
