Default 3:15 gears

I have purchased 3:15 gears to replace the stock ones in my '01 auto. I am looking for information on installation, amount of time it will take, does the computor have to be recalculated, etc.
Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks

Don't know where Ellicottville is but feel free to give a call and I'd be happy to provide some help/info.

start by reading here:

when you say you purchased 3.15 "gears" ... do you mean the entire carrier - or just the ring/pinion gear set?

Joe, I'll give you a call in the next couple of days, Ellicottville is about 70 miles south of Buffalo.

Mike, I just have the gears, no carrier.

Thanks for the help!

second question... when you say "replace the stock ones" - do you mean the 3.15 already in your car needs replaced, or are you upgrading from the 2.73 ?

I have a question, do you need to change the T/C if you change from the 2.73 gears to the 3.15 gears?

If you upgrade from 2.73's to 3.15's, you will need to have your car reprogrammed to compensate for the gear scaling.
It is not necessary to replace your TC, but if you plan on upgrading your TC in the future, now would be the time to do it.
Replacement of the TC is a matter of personal preference. A higher stall TC will give you a better launch, but (depending on the size) may make the car feel looser on the street (higher revs and not going anywhere). Depending on the size of TC you may also require a trans cooler to help control the excess heat generated by the increased slippage.
The getrag differential is more complicated than a standard solid axle rear end, if you are planning on doing a gear swap (not a diff swap), it would be prudent for you to investigate this thoroughly before attempting the gear swap yourself. There are plently of 3.15 differentials out there (factory units that other people have forsaken for lower ratios), that you could purchase pre-assembled for relatively cheap.
I would suggest looking at a lower ratio set-up, such as a 3.42 or 3.73,
as the jump from 2.73 to 3.15 is relatively small and I think you will be disappointed.
However, this is simply my opinion and I think you should do more investigating before making your decision.

hightest; thanks.

Not only what you've stated, but the 2.73 carrier (case) is different than the others. The Getrag built 3.15, 3.42, and 3.73 carriers share the same case (called a "3 series"), but the 2.73 has a different case (2 series) ; and was never intended to have any other gear sets installed.

Only until about 2 years ago did one company... and one only - figure how to upgrade gears in the 2.73 carrier casing; and that is DTE.
They have to mill certain interior points within the case and install a custom made spacer. The spacer moves the internal reluctor wheel back to it's original position so the VSS sensor will work. THe differing gears ratios in the larger "3" series carrier cases have the reluctor wheen in a slightly different location. When any "3" series gear sets are installed into a "2" series case, then spacer is needed to realign things. DTE makes this special spacer in-house.

Fredm; if you already had these bases covered, then I wasted your time.

who is going to do the internal gear swapping for you... is it DTE ?
