Default operating temp question

what is the maximum temperature a stock c-5 should run before you should be concerned? Is 225 within "normal" operating temp? ( asking because i got a low coolant flash on dic one day, and started watching the temp closely when it got up to 228 at one point!just not sure if that is considered warm for these or not...btw checked coolant and was full and rechecked after it cooled... still fine...)

thanks guys,
its just one of those things i'm not sure of...

Mine does that in traffic. I think that's when the fans turn on. I believe it's normal.

My 04 run's at 220 most of the time, I to was concered about these temps but it seems to be normal from all of the responses that I had received, but it still bothers me> I have already changed the stat out to a 160 and I'm waiting to put my headers on and will adjust the fan setting when I get it tuned.

GM sets all their vehicles to kick the coolant fan @ 228*F. It's normal.

Fans kick on in high speed about 228-230 or so. Those temps are normal in hot, low air flow conditions such as stop and go traffic where the fan set points control the upper temp. On the freeway, mine saw closer to 200-210 normally.

COOLANT OVER TEMP warning comes on the DIC at 255 degrees. For normal driving, my 2003 stays in the mid 190's. It will get up to mid 220's in slow traffic.

I don't usually pay much attention to coolant temps but I did notice today that mine popped up to about 215-220 (its about 75 degrees outside today). I normally pay attention to my oil temps. I keep them displayed in the DIC at all times. In traffic I am usually up around 220 in heavy traffic. As soon as traffic opens up it drops back down to 200-207 on a 70-80 deg day. I think your temps are normal and nothing to be overly concerned about.

You may want to consider a cooler thermo for spring and summer months. If you do, make sure you get some tuning to turn on your fans or switching to a cooler thermo is all for nothing.

I am switching to a 170 thermostat in the next month or so to keep my mind at ease......

Have you checked to see if you have any codes? Set vehicle to run with out starting the car push and hold the options button and push the fuel button 4 times and codes will display.

Not sure if any codes apply to coolant temps. Just a thought.

If the reservoir is full and you are getting a low coolant warning, I'd guess that the level probe may be broken or disconnected. Either should be a relatively easy fix for the dealer. Good luck.

Concerning the low coolant light with the resevoir full like you said. I believe GM had a tech net note concerning that. The light will go on if you're sitting or parked heading down a hill with a good angle to it. The sensor is in the back of the tank so all the coolant simply goes to the front of the tank in that situation. There apparently is a way to align the tank to prevent that from happening.
