I have a 98 convertible with auto trans. I read a lot about colum lock recall's. I bought my car used in Sept. 04. should I be concerned about this and how can I tell if the recall has been done in my car, and what may happen if it has not been done? TY
If you can turn the steering wheel with the key out of the ignition then the recall has been done. You can also take your vin to a dealer and they can tell you what has been done to the car.
Should you be concerned? That depends on who you ask. Some will say there are three things that are guaranteed in life, death, taxes & CL.
If it's a DD then maybe you should do something to prevent it from locking up. If you don't have a fear of going to the dealer you can check to see if your car is on the recall and let them do it.

My 0.02: Do the recall, you don't want to get stuck somewhere and have your car towed b/c of this stupid problem. (You will be unable to turn your steering wheel)
Note: Be aware that the dealer will update your PCM, so if you had any custom programming done, it will be gone. In this case I suggest the column lock bypass harness, ~$50.
The recall will not prevent you from getting stuck some where with a
column lock message. the recall on an auto trans car just removes the
lock plate to prevent the column from remaining locked when it should
not. the column lock module is still in the vehicle and operating. if it
fails to send the unlock message which is the most common problem the pcm will still cut fuel as soon as it gets a wheel speed signal.
My 98 auto would lock up about twice a month, so I would pull the wheel to the right and put the key in it and it would unlock. I got sick of doing this about the time the recall came out, I think in July. I had the recall done and have not had a problem since. I would get the recall done, it worked for me. Why pay $50 for the bypass, when the recall will fix the problem???

Because there have been several people who still get stuck by this problem after the recall "fix" has been done. Get the colum lock bypass and don't screw around with this.

The CLB is good unless you have a early year ('97-'98) C5. Many owners reported problems w/ pull key and wait 10 seconds. etc., etc. Some reported that problems, codes, etc., were such a PITA, they disconnected the CLB. If you have a A4---Have the dealer do the "fix'. As I've already noted, had this done 18 mos. ago---works great, and no fear of steering wheel lock up.
I never had a problem UNTILL the dealer did the re-call on my "97" C5, then I got the "pull key, wait 10 sec". Then I get "service column lock"
at that point the Dealer had to tow it. The Dealer said, it was a bad relay that we installed and GM is making better ones, but for now we will install a "by-pass", I said that works for me.
