Either on the left rear frame rail above the axle or inside the gas tank, depending on exactly when your car was built.

Might try technical section or shop manual.

Your filter is in your gas tank.

I think they switched from the frame rail to inside the gas tank sometime in the middle of 2003.

Dude, I feel for ya. Why in the world would anybody design a service item like a filter to be in tank?

It takes 4 years of brain washing to remove ones common sense, once it has been purged you are given the title of Engineer..... .....

Turns out I may have to be in there anyway (the tank).
I have been hearing a high pitched sound comming from that area and believe it may be the pump.....

You are right...that is exactly where the filter SHOULD be. Unfortunately, that is not where it is.
You have to pull the left side fuel tank out to get to the filter.

What all is involved with that?
Is that where the pump is too?

And I take it that is a different filter............probably 3 times as much as it is some sort of dealer only special order........

I have not actually replaced the filter on my 04, but I think it is part of the fuel pump assembly. According to GM, they should last 100,000 miles!
To remove the tank, you have to remove the muffler, a drive line support, the crossover between the two tanks, and all the lines.
It is not really a routine maintenance item anymore.

The filter was moved to the in-tank type in mid 2003 when they changed the entire fuel system.

A fuel filter that has a service interval of 100K miles? Not that I haven't run one that long... Mine is an 02 and the filter is right where it should be and I have the part u4ick posted. Mine is getting swapped at 40K along with the plugs, whether GM says they are good for a 100K or not...

That said we just rebuilt the top end of the engine on my wife's Monte Carlo with a 3.4L. 148K on it. I replaced the original fuel filter and plugs during the overhaul. The car never actually ran bad. Well until the intake manifold pissed coolant all over the place.
