Anyway, I plan on ordering an automatic trans. Does this make me a wimp???
I live in DC and I don't want to work the clutch for 2 hours a day? BTW, I will not be using this as my commute car (get this I drive a Honda Civic Hybrid - it gets me on the HOV lanes solo - I know... sahme on me!!!) except on days I am showing off.
Auto vs. Manual???
I'm sure I will get flamed for this, but I say wimp. Ive had 6 Vettes, 1 an automatic. The auto lasted 14 months, couldnt stand it. Love the control and contact with the car in a 6 speed. Even in heavy traffic. Just my 2 cents, flame on.
MN6, but thats me, I enjoy shifting during daily driving, and I miss it too. Current vehicle is auto and I wish it could be replaced with something with a stick
As a daily driver in big-city traffic is the only barely-passable cover for getting an automatic. Since as you say yours won't be your commute car, then yes, I'm afraid that would make you a wimp. ;-)
On a somewhat more serious note, the idea of 400 hp/400 ft-lb's with something other than the driver controlling the transmission kinda scares the bejeezus out of me. (Esp. with reports that the Z51 tires slip silently.) The last thing I want with that kind of power on tap is to be surprised by a sudden unexpected downshift or two.

i also drive 95 from stafford to dc each day, what a fricking mess. I have the mn6. lucky for me i've been able to mostly work from 10 - 6 so i get the hov lanes. when i'm stuck in traffic i hardlyy ever make in into 2nd much less third, but it's not that bad, yes it is it sucks but......
you know motocycles also get to take the hov at anytime. you could pick up a nice Fat Boy and really enjoy the ride
if you're not gonna use it as a daily commuter i would get the manual but it's really up to you and what's gonna make you comfortable.
the manual is a bit quicker but otherwise they are the same.
have you, by any chance spoken with Tarry over at Pallone ?

I've owned six vettes: 2 4-spd, 3 6-spd, and one automatic. I did not enjoy the auto like the others. If your vette is not the commute car I would highly recommend the 6-spd.

Auto vs. Manual???
It is totally your decision as you have to live with it. The Z51 6-Speed is a nice combo.
Huh??? Perfect launch with A4...you got to be kidding. Talk about having an A4 for heavy rush hour traffic..that makes sense but don't talk about tracks and not having a M6. There is more than just straight line and you just can't compete against a M6. BTW I will miss a gear every once in awhile but kick butt every other time.
I don't think he was kidding about the launch. There was a similiar thread about a month ago where the auto owners were making the same observations. Even though GM posts better times with the 6-speed, you need to be very good operating it. If the auto had the same gearing as the manual, they would probably be very close, close enough that with the M6 one would have to be very good to compete. I took the liberty to visit the NHRA site and look up the National Record holders. Almost in every class the autos were faster than the manuals. Goodbye wimp factor. I have a M6 and like it very much, but if my driving included a lot of daily heavy traffic, the A4 would be chosen.
Auto vs. Manual: I have driven manuals and autos for the last 40 years (aghhh! Can't believe it has been 40 years already). In the 60's I found the manual to be somewhat of a chore (because no one had ever instructed me with the fine art of shifting) and preferred the auto. But when I worked in Europe as a tire designer, some of my friends were professional race and ralleye drivers. They instructed me on how to utilize and shift the manual for tohe optimum shifting/driving experience. Since then, all my muscle and sport cars have been manuals (MGB, XKE, Mach 1, 2 - RX-7s and soon my C6). My wife's HEMI magnum is an auto. Great car to drive and I do love it, but I do miss the shifting. There is nothing like running up through the gears and there is a no better feeling than seamless downshifting. Love it, love it, love it.
Can't wait for my Vette.
OBTW, my wife will be also driving my Vette. She is good with a manual.
Whether you get a manual or automatic - you are going to love your car.
This my 7th Vette since 1972 and I decided to go with the 6 speed this time. I live in Orange County, So Cal where the traffic is very bad, however, the Vette is a weekend car and not a daily driver. I have the Z51 as well. If I was going to get an auto, I would not get the Z51 - for me it is all performance options or auto with F55. The clutch is as easy to depress as was the one in my old four-cylinder Toyota pick-up. Either way, you will enjoy the car.
Anyway, I plan on ordering an automatic trans. Does this make me a wimp???
If, in your mind, this is a "serious" question, then you were kinda "wimpy" to begin with. This reminds me very much of the question posted a few weeks back in which the 'vert owner asked "what position should I have my windows when I have the top down on my car?

There should be nothing unexpected about when the A4 downshifts. The cardinal point about automatics is their consistency. They shift the same way under the same conditions of load demand, engine RPMs, and road speed every time. An automatic is like a perfect driver perfectly attuned to his car. It hits every shift at precisely the same point every time. If you're paying even half the attention you would be if driving a manual, you should be expecting every shift.
To each his own. IMO if you want a sports car, then the only way to go is a 6 speed. It's a lot more fun shifting gears. If it's not a daily driver, don't drive in the city. Please don't feel affended by my comments. I have and 02 Camaro SS with a six speed and also a C6 with a 6 speed. I just love to shift. My daily diver is an automatic.

With all due respect, if all you have purchased are autos then how would you know?
Honestly, for overall performance the MN6 is the way to go.
However, having said that, if all you want the car for is a daily driver and you have to deal with a lot of traffic then you should get what makes you most comfortable and if that is an auto then by all means go with the auto, it's your car, buy it to suit YOUR needs and wants. After all, you're still driving a Vette. Personally, I prefer manuals, I like to have total control of the car and take advantage of every bit of performance the car has to offer, but that's just me.

We kid around about auto trannys being wimpy, but the truth is, it's your personal preference. For me, as long as I can physically use the clutch and the gear shift, then I will always prefer a manual tranny. Unfortunately for me, 13 years of competitive butterfly, and 30 years of weight lifting have left me with pretty bad arthritis in both shoulders. Hopefully it won't become a problem...
