Default Removing inside rearview mirror

I could have sworn this was mentioned in some previous post - did a search and did not get any hits so here is the question:

I am going to get a V1 radar detector (or Escort 8500 X50 – depends on what hour of the day it is – LOL) and wish to hard wire it. I will need to get at the wiring that goes to the mirror. If I remove the mirror I will have more room to work. How does the mirror come off the windshield? Does it simply twist off??

You don't need to remove the mirror. Just pop the wiring harness out the back - it has a litle tag you press - and it will pull down plenty far enough. I used TeamBiker's Quick-Connect cord to tap into the plug.

No need to remove mirror as mentioned above, everyone including me just up popped the wire harness and used this to hook it up:

KLO's (teambiker's) connector is an easy install - pop the harness plug on the back of the mirror, push the pins on his connector into the designated wiring slots, plug the harness back into the mirror, and plug the other end into your radar detector. It takes just a couple minutes.

The only hangup I had with the install was when I was trying to check the voltage after hooking up the connector. It turns out that just having Accessory Power on is not enough to get power to the hot wire - you actually have to start the car to get it powered up (at least on the 1SB).

I've got a Passport Solo S2, the battery powered one, because I didn't want any wires and wanted to switch from car to car. But, the wire is short and can hardly be seen, and it sure is nice to have it hard wired.

Additionally, I got a mount from:

http://www.greatlakestrophies.com/

Makes for a real nice professional installation.

beezeye; Thanks for the link to Great Lakes Trophy, best price yet on the mount bracket. Do you have a link to the wiring harness from "teambiker"?

Yes - teambiker is a forum member and KLO posted a message in this thread with a link to his site. Click on:

Hardwire Connector for Radar Detectors

There is a link on that site for his email address (teambiker@yahoo.com) for ordering.

To clarify, I do not make the hook up cords, I just bought one and installed it, everyone needing one needs to email teambiker@aol.com and you need to tell him if you are using the visor mount or the mirror mount as the visor mount takes a longer cord........

Has anybody tried the visor mount from Great Lakes? Does it clear the OnStar box?

I have the visor mount, but I put it on the driver's side so it's right in front of me. I mounted my hardwired Solo S2 on it.

I'll try to get a picture and post it.

These aren't great pictures, but maybe you can see what an Escort Solo S2 looks like on a Great Lakes Trophy visor mount.

Here's a picture of my S2 on a Great Lakes Trophy visor mount on my Driver's side visor. You can see TeamBiker's hardwire connector coming from the mirror over about 6 inches to the detector.

Here's another picture (kinda blurry!) of the S2 on the visor mount.

Here's a picture from outside looking in. You can see the hardwire connector from the mirror to the S2 on the visor mount.

The Valentine is a larger unit and might be a little more obtrusive mounted on the driver's side, but the 8500 or S2 are up and out of your field of view for driving, but right there in front of you if you get an alert.

Thanks for the photos. Yeah, to me the Valentine is too big to put on the driver's side. I like it on the passenger side -- it's out of the way, but I still see it in my peripheral vision and every time I scan.

I seem to have a different wiring setup on my mirror harness...there is a black(ground), and orange which is hot all the time, and a white, which is switched. however, if I use the white for vcc to power the detector, it powers up maybe 15 seconds after ignition start-up, which is fine, but when I shut down the motor, the detector powers down , as it should, but after 15 seconds or so, it powers back up with ignition off.....any way to make it stay off ?
I am powering both a detector and a laser jammer. Would like not to have to turn them on and off individually.
