I did a trip to Death Valley yesterday and had some problems with my fuel gauge. It kept going to zero then resetting. This caused the check engine light, low range indicator and service fuel system on the DIC to come on.
The gauge eventually reset itself and now apears to be functioning properly. I suspect it will return. These things don't usually fix themselves.
I let the tank run down to nearly empty so it would be easier to service if they had to drop the tank. I ran it down to the "Range Low" on the DIC illuminated. By then the gauge was working fine and I didn't feel like droping my car at the dealer. So I filled it up, topped it off.
If anybody was wondering, it took 16 gallons exactly to fill. That means there is 2 gallons left in your tank when the "Range Low" message appears.
I post this because I think it is always a good idea to know your limits. It's nice to know what is left when the light comes on.
I hope this helps answer that question if you were wondering.
I had the same problem (around 800 miles), turned out to be the Fuel Gauge Sending Unit. Dealer replaced, no problems. Make sure you use a Top Tier gas ( I switched to Chevron - no problems at 3,200 miles).
