Default Couple quick questions

I will be *attempting* to pick up my car Friday. I have a 600-mile drive back home from the dealership. Assuming the new clutch & hydraulic system & battery all hold up, and there are no other gremlins in my car, I'll be breaking the car in on the way back home.

What are the break in procedures? The car will have about 50 miles when I finally get it.

Also, I am well aware the head unit does not play .mp3s. However, will it play burned CDs, ie, copy of original audio CDs? (I have the Nav radio).

Finally, how do you get the Navi to work? I will actually need it on the way home. Can you install the software on the fly, or is there some lawyer BS that forces you to turn the car off to load the software? If you do have to install the software prior to using the Navi, how long does it take?

Thanks in advance -- and PLEASE wish me luck.

Default Great Times Ahead!

Your dealer should prep everything, including the Nav.

Your "Home" should be your home.

The break-in is in the manual (found on FAQ's).

Congrat's.

My drive home was great!

Just pop in the NAV DVD and it is 'programmed'. As far as CD's...the NAV unit will play copies of audio CD's.

Thanks gentlemen. If anyone has the general breakin guidelines and can take a sec to link them or say them here, I'd appreciate it.

Vary your speed and rpms the first 500 miles. The book actually says not to drive over 55 MPH the first 500 miles, but a lot of folks don't believe in that. Most do say no full throttle starts the first 500 miles.

Avoid hard stops the first 200 miles.

There is also a link to a Microsoft Word document version of the NAV manual in the forum. Look for the link on this page:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=927981

You could read up ahead of time so you are more familiar with it.

If you want I have the PDF file on my computer 1.1MB which I could e-mail you if you want to PM me with your e-mail I guess.

I got it by following the link on that same page. Was kind of a hassle to get the PDF cause ya had to create a yahoo account 1st, sign in, and then locate it.

When I picked up my 2000 coupe at the Museum, this is exactly what I was told - vary the speed, no WOT, and avoid situations that might require hard braking. Forget the 55mph "lawyer speak" in the manual. I "varied the speed" between 70 and 90 for the 2600 mile trip back to CA, and never had a bit of a problem with that car in 43K miles.

Thanks. That's what I needed to know. I appreciate the help.

I really hope that all of the snags are out of the way.........I have waited a long time to get this car -- more than most people, that's for sure.

Varying the RPM's is more important than varying the speed. Since you will mostly be driving on the highway simply alternate between 5th and 6th gear every few miles. This will vary your RPM's enough. Also, as stated, no aggressive starts or stops.

Enjoy the ride and I hope they got the car fixed right.

I think you have a bad case of "reading too many of the horror stories in the forum" - Im sure your drive back home will be nothing short of FUN - best advice is: "Just enjoy it, follow the break-in stuff mentioned already, be sure to wave to other vettes, and most importantly - dont invite a gremlin in by worrying about the remote odds of something going wrong - the odds are your car will be nothing but a pleasure to drive for many many miles...."

Congrats on the new toy!!

When I picked mine up from Kerbecks he suggested you "Drive it like you stole it" meaning ease into the excelleration, but don't be afraid of driving it. As other's have said, vary the RPMs, and try a get a little city driving in with the first 500 miles as well.

To help you vary your speed and if you have time, take backroads, enjoy the handling, and no hard or panic braking.

Happy Trails!

Thanks fellas. Based on all the bad luck I've had so far, it's hard not to be pessimistic. Hopefully it will work out for the best.

For the brake system, Baer has a set of tech tips on how to season your rotors and bed your pads the proper way.

After fifty miles of transport driving, I am unsure if this would be effective any more.
