Ignition Switch Noise

Is it normal for the ignition switch to make a brief electronic "swawking" noise when the on postion is pressed just before the engine is started?

Is it a locking system being turned off?

Do you have a manual transmission? If so, what you're probably hearing is the steering column lock releasing. If you have an auto, which doesn't have the steering column lock, then I don't know what you're hearing, but I don't think it can come from the switch. The switch is a simple illuminated rocker switch, nothing in it to make noise.
