I'm considering a Z51 vs an '05 M3 w/ competition package. i'd be interested in your thoughts on a daily driver in the two comparisons. i haven't driven the C6 for fear I'll want to order it.
FWIW, I just test drove a C6 with F55 and a M3 without comp package over the past couple of weeks trying to decide the same thing. I put about 50-60 city and highway miles on each. Overall, the C6 handled the rough stuff MUCH better than the M3, which beat me up pretty much. I did notice a bit more body flex (noise) in the C6, but the ride was WAY more comfortable, even more so than my current vehicle, a 2004 BMW 330Ci with sport suspension. The C6 had more road noise than the M3, but it wasn't annoying. The best thing you can do is drive both to draw your own conclusions.

I went from a Dinan M Roadster to a C6 vert. and am of the opinion that the M is a far distant second in every category except perhaps cornering. However, I am new enough in the vette to withhold judgement even on this.

I had a 2001 M3 cabrio and let the lease expire, turned the car in, and now am patiently waiting or my C6....haven't looked back since.
The M was a wonderful car, but it left me feeling neutral after 3 years. It just didn't satisfy the soul. It really is hard to explain. I would get mostly positive comments about the car.
Acceleration, handling, and fit and finish were top notch. There really isn't much to say thats negative, but I guess that car just wasn't for me.
My 98 C5 coupe was fun to drive and is one of the few cars I regret selling.
I hate sounding vague, but thats basically how the M3 left me...vague.
I'm considering going the other way. I've just placed a deposit (refundable) on a 2006 M3. It is will be powered by the super smooth V8 from prev. M5 and priced at about the same level as current M3 (or so the salesmonkey is telling me)
I'm not thrilled with a Z51 C6, and the new Z06 will be priced out of my price range. So the new M3 will be a decent replacement for my current Z06 and have rear seats!

Except for the ton of problems with the E46 M3 (take it from me)..
Resale value is for ****..(due to the engine problems.) I went through 2 engines and 2 bearing recalls.. High failure on Differential..

That is why I never considered the current M3. The V8 they are putting into a new one is from M5 and is an older, well-known engine and is quite reliable.
I actually disagree on the resale value - they still sell well. The only local BMW dealer only has one new car on the lot and it is pre-sold.
They have 2 used cars, both 2004 ~ 20K miles on them and they are asking like $2K less than original MSRP.

An 01 E46M3 can be had for less then 30k now. Not to mention there is absolutely nothing you can do to that car to make more HP.. its tapped out right from the factory.

Yeah, I can see that. I bet everybody is waiting for the new one.
I was number 17 on the list so I won't see that car for at least 2-3 years.

They can ask anything they want, how much are they actually selling for?
Also, I would really have to question the purchasing savvy and even the basic intelligence of the person that would actually pay a mere $2k under NEW MSRP for a freakin' 20k mile old used car at this level. :bb

Well, they don't have any new M3s on the lot - you'd have to order one. I mean I'm sure you can prolly drop their asking price on the used vehicles - but you're starting pretty high. Plus, I don't have even the slightest interest in the current M3, so I didn't poke around.
Plus, they are the only BMW dealer in SA area, so no competition to worry about. I just like the fact that they don't do any "market adjustment" games with their cars. I've placed a deposit and they will sell me a car at MSRP - which was pretty rare when the current M3 came up in 2001

I thought they were putting an engine based on the 4 liter GTR engine??

AMEN, brother. Resale is crap! When I thought of trading it in prior to my lease expiring, no-one would touch it for more than 30K!!!!! Finally i said the heck with it and just waited for the lease to run out. The dealer promptly certified it and asked 44k for it. I know the guy who bought it...last summer for 34. 01 M3 45000 miles.

Well, you say that it is crap - but try to sell a 2001 corvette coupe with 45K miles for the same price. So I'd say the resale is about as good or even better than for C6.
