Of course they will make it. This is a large competitive industry and GM has the resources and talent to get through this. It has happened to them before and will happen again. The auto industry is very cyclical in nature.

Unfortunately, the lead weight around their neck "Pension plan and health care" is a HUGE burden. It costs a ton per car. Those days are over, but GM is stuck with it's legacy.

With the court decisions coming down in favor of cutting airline pensions, I'd watch for GM to step in and try to do the same.

Default If GM Goes Move to Rio

GM will never go under. The government will not allow that. They will infuse $ so fast the green will turn brown from the heat. Remember Chrysler in the 80s?

Yes! I just hope Lutz can hang in there for 3-5 more years. The only question is whether Rick will be at the helm or if Jack Welch comes out of retirement to lead GM into battle with the unions and Kerkorian.

GM will have to adjust to the market.

Default Quality

I sure hope GM's woes won't affect the quality of the product they sell, especially the corvettes. If anything what affects will this have on the corvette?

They'll be fine, but they have some tough decisions to make...their stock being reduced to "junk" status might be a wake-up call.

You nailed it. The unions obviously got their way at every turn and now the chickens are coming home to roost.

Oh, great. Unions drive the company to the brink of ruin and taxpayers have to bail them out??? I retired from IBM and have to pay more each year for health care. Let the GM workers and retirees do the same.

I agree, and union loyalty does nothting for putting food on the table when the company they work for goes bankrupt.

However, I dont' think that is going to happen. I don't think GM will allow it, and neither will the government...ultimately neither will the unions...they realise they can't let it get to that.

GM will be around for a long time...and it sounds like a good time to buy GM stock while it is on "sale".

GM will survive, and so will others. To do so, they will renegotiate with the unions, and there will be casualties. United is leading the way in that department, and they are showing no signs of stopping.

But that may be what needs to be done.

Yes, they will survive. The union leadership will be out of jobs if a Major Auto mfgr. goes under. Remember, the union survives today to benefit the leadership, not the average union member. Just like any other political entity.

I think GM will survive. But, ultimately, it will have to be a very different company. Labor will have to have leadership that looks beyond the next paycheck, and the historically huge duplication of lines will be streamlined. It won't happen overnight, but just like nature, economic evolution will prevail. Common sense in management and labor could bring a successful resolution much faster, but it seems ego leaves little room for intelligence at the leadership level; a shame.

Sure they will survive. On GM America last week they said that GM has 11 Billion in CASH and hat for every model car sold $1,600 bucks goes to fund pensions (for life) how that for taking care of your own. Compare that Toyoyta that only sets aside $66 for its employees pension (that is only paid out for slightly less that 3 years).

Buy American... Tanks, Planes, Steel & GM built Vettes

I agree. Buy American and you're supporting the best charity you can, your own economy. Those folks at GM just want what we all want, a decent health plan and retirement. Nothing wrong with a company being old and having legacy costs.

So long as the corvette doesn't go to crap in terms of quality through all of this , we will all be happy
