Hi Everyone-
New to the forum. I've had 2 C5's ('98 coupe; '01 convertible), took delivery a few weeks ago on a C6 convertible (Victory red). Two weeks into owning it (well, ok, owned by me and my bank, to be precise) the power top wouldn't work.
Brought it back to the dealer, and they had all kinds of problems with Bowling Green. Couldn't figure out the problem, finally they narrowed it down to the actuator, but the parts manager at the dealer was increasingly frustrated from the lack of support. Finally, this past Friday, he received five-- count 'em, 5-- calls from 5 different engineers at GM about the problem.
They had no extra actuators at the plant-- or anywhere else-- so they solved the problem (mine, that is) by grabbing one from one that's on the assembly line (apologies if anyone out there is waiting for a power top C6 that he/she thought was being built this week) and it was shipped Friday.
It was installed today, and it's working fine...after being in the shop almost 10 days. Still, there's obviously something up that 5 different engineers called AND one engineer wanted to be on the phone the entire time today that the part was being installed by the mechanic at my dealer.
Dealer was nice about it --then again, he's a client; I'm a lawyer (uh, please, no lawyer jokes, guys). He had given me a loaner the entire time and even had the salesman drive to my office to deliver the loaner and pick up my C6.
Finally (and sorry this post is so long!), I really enjoy reading the forum. I'm really glad to be part of the community.
I was debating the power top. Sales guy even told me not to get it. He told me they were having problems with them. But I think it could have been a problem from momths before I ordered mine in March, but still he was talking about it and it kinda made sense that there is more moving parts to have to worry about down the road.
I guess the real reason I stayed away is my Vert is gonna be a weekend cruiser in SoCal. I plan on putting top down and heading out for the day and putting it back up when I return. Plus it added about $55 a month to my lease payment for something that will not be an issue for me.
For the same reason I did not order XM and Onstar. Another $22 a month for something I would never use. Heck I have both on my DD "2004 Z71 Suburban" and don't use either!! One of the good things about ordering your car is you don't have to get the items you will never use!
All three of these items I would have purchased if they met my needs!!
Regardless, enjoy your Vert now that it's fixed!!!
Up here in Canada the power top was not a option...it came with it. After I saw it work, I did a hail mary, and prayed, cause if anything on this beauty of a car is gonna mess up, (IMHO) it's that power top...
I had a 2004 XLR and dumped it last year - the power top kept sticking despite the dealers repeated efforts to fix it - I own a triple black C6 vert and elected to skip the power top feature. Its a really neat option when it works but it seems to undependable and fragile. I hope you have a better experience then I did.
I know I shouldn't say this.....but I haven't had any problems with mine yet.
It goes up and down maybe 4 or 5 times a week............it is a good idea, however, to locate the manual tonneau release and the pump so that you can complete the cycle manually if need be.
Just about avery other convertible out there has an automatic top--this isn't rocket science. It shouldn't be that difficult to make one that is reliable. Had 2 convertible mustangs 94 and 97 never any problems, so I ordered my vert with the auto top -- I would like to think the General can get this right.
What was the failure mode? did it just not go up/ down or did it go part way? I have a PT Vert and it seemed like it wass catching one time however it has worked flawlessly since

That's been my attitude all along...........why is it so *#*#! difficult to get this right?
