Supposedly the coupe hatch should latch automatically once it starts to pull itself down. I find I have to pull it down with at least some force for this to happen. Is this normal?
Absolutely.
It wasn't intended to be like the Caddy's auto pull-down.
Just give a good pull on the handle to get the momentum going and then the mechanism does the rest.
That's normal. If you close it gently, it doesn't catch. If you close it hard, it closes immediately. Somewhere in between and it will catch and pull down the rest of the way.
If your windows and doors are closed, it will take some force to enage the electric pull down. There is a grab handle under the hatch that makes it easier to flip the hatch lid down.
If a window or door is open, the hatch lid will drop and close easily.
I'm to the point now that I make sure there's a window or door open before dropping it down. It's easier than removing the hand prints off the lid when you push hard.

Just takes practice to get just the right amount of force.
Mine acts the same way. I heard from one member who was invited to the, for the lack of a better phrase, the "warranty get together" for owners and GM put a new style latch on that worked much better. GM is aware of the problem, but I guess we all have to just deal with it. It is very inconsistent at best.
