Apparently Shell is introducing a new premium fuel next week in Canada called V-Power. From what I have read it is replacing their Optimax Gold product. Do you think this is just a marketing ploy to rename their premium formulation or a legitimate new product ? Is it available in the US yet ?
We have had it on the US east coast for quite a while. I have noticed no difference either in milege or performance on my C5. No doubt there is some difference in the formulation. see http://www.localshell.com/Content.aspx?ArticleID=29
That may shed more light on the fuel.

V power is the only thing that's been in my C6 since I got it

Shell finally jumped on the Top Tier Fuels bandwagon last December. All this really means is that they've added more detergent to the fungible gasolines they market. Other brands, QuikTrip, Chevron, Conoco, Phillips, Union 76, Entec Stations, and MFA Oil Company, did this some time ago. More detergent, within reason, is generally a good thing, but it isn't the big deal that Shell's advertising is currently trying to make it out to be.
What about all the autos that had there fuel sending units zapped by Shell's decision to distribute a high sulfur fuel? How many thousands of autos had fuel sensors replaced including my C5? I would never use Shell again.

I used Shell Prem V until my gas gauge was allowed a drink of high sulphur gas,, Now I use Amaco Prem. Sold by BP here.
Shell--Exxon/Mobil---Amoco/BP--- come on gas is gas as long as you stick with a name brand. I fill up at one of the 3 and have never had any problems with any car I am driving.

There is one benefit to higher sulfur fuels, they contain a natural lubricant which helps reduce friction in the engine.
Biodiesel is a fantastic lubricity additive and biodiesel is going to become even more important in the nations fuel mix as the US moves towards using Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuel. Testing at labs such as Southwest Research Institute, Standyne Automotive and Engineering Testing Services have demonstrated that biodiesel provides significant lubricity improvement over petroleum diesel fuel, even at blend levels as low as 1%.
When the sulfur present in diesel fuel is combusted by the engine, it results in the black smoke and high emission levels in the exhaust plume. The sulfur level of petroleum based diesel fuel that is used for on-road purposes is limited to 0.05% by weight. This limit was mandated in 1993 as a method to decrease particulate matter emitted from diesel powered vehicles.
With the introduction of mandated Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) low-sulfur diesel fuel, fleet operators began to encounter premature wear and/or failure of injector pumps in increasing numbers. Pump manufacturers began recommending the use of lubricity additives to alleviate the damage that the low sulfur diesel was causing to their injection pumps.
The refinery process that removes sulfur, not only lowers the sulfur content but also removes trace amounts of certain polar impurities. Both organo-sulfur compounds and these polar impurities are the ingredients that give diesel fuel its needed natural lubricating qualities.
The EPA has now mandated that the sulfur content in diesel fuel be lowered in on and off road uses, with further tightening in 2005/6 to 15 PPM, a standard that is called Ultra Low Sulfur diesel. In France, biodiesel in small amounts is mandated in every gallon of diesel fuel sold and helps that country use Ultra Low Sulfur diesel throughout its fueling infrastructure. Biodiesel could be used in the same way here in America.

Scientific experiment, this ain't. Work for Shell, I do not. Yoda with bad grammar, I am sounding like. But, I had the gas gauge gremlins in my C5 for several months and a few distressing drops to zero fuel reading when I thought I knew-- and there was-- gas in the tank. Switched to the new Shell premium stuff exclusively (94 octane in this area), at one particular station, and it fixed the problem after about 4 tankfuls. Mileage may vary, yours...

V Power is a "Top Tier" Gas. Top Tier Gas was developed by the EPA, Fuel Makers, and 4 Auto makers (GM one of them) Top Tier is the way to go. http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html

When we in New Orleans first saw V-Power we were told it was higher octane gas. I thought they would change the pumps over soon to 94 octane but they never did. But going by the SOMP experience I feel like my C5 is slightly faster. I wonder if the knock sensor is giving full timing advance. Whatever that is. Whether it's real or not it's the feeling that really matters on this Earth..
I worked for Mobil so I am not partial to any oil company. Heck it was a battle trying to keep them from lowering our pay and benefits every year.
I too had the high sulfur gas gauge blues for a few months. It would show empty when I had just filled the tank up. But now I think Shell watches quality at the highest level because they are under the microscope . And quite a few class action lawsuits! And by the way I just saw Star Wars III and that Yoda was a class act.
