I was fortunate enough to be invited on a Friends and Family cruise aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt a couple of Saturdays ago. They had two planes on board as we left, we were moored(?) between the USS Kennedy and the USS Truman, three aircraft carriers in a row, talk about awesome!! One of the planes took off and landed twice, what a thrill. Did you know that when the pilot is ready to take off his hands are totally off of the controls? It's not until after he gets airborne that he takes the controls. The airwing, stationed at Oceana Naval Air Station in Norfolk, sent us a dozen or so of many types of aircraft and put on an airshow right off the ship. Did I say Awesome?? You ought to hear an FA-18 break the sound barrier, he did it twice. The catapult goes from 1-160mph in 2 seconds. Damn pround to be an American.
The Roosevelt will be leaving for the Gulf in late Summer, man do we ever owe those folks a debt of gratitude--E
Was a weapons loading crew chief in late 60s / early 70s on F106 & F102 aircraft (both are in the Smithsonian now!). That was awsome. Thanks for sharing.
PS - how does one STOP doing that for a living? What else would replace that? Oh - I know - a Z06!
Thanks for posting ... brings back memories. Did that about 100 times back in the day from the USS Coral Sea in the Gulf of Tonkin. It's about the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
You don't replace it ... it's the ultimate rush. Even a blast in the C-6 is not the same rush .. its a rush, just not as intense.
