I was installing an iPod yesterday with the Vette in the garage and had unlocked the door and left the fob on the kitchen counter. I shut the door and it locked. I expected that. However, the only way I could get out was by using the manual opener on the floor. Pressing the unlock button didn't work.
That's correct. If there is no fob detected and you have the car set to passive lock, the car will be locked in that situation. If it allowed you to simply hit the unlock button, anyone would have access to the car if it was left locked with the windows down by simply reaching in and hitting the unlock button.

Stan - think about what you just said. This would be true of any car that does not have "electric" door openers. In addition, what is to stop someone from walking up to the car with the windows down and opening it the way he did - with the manual latch on the floor?
the same thing happened to me last night i had left the top down on the vert but being monday in nj. it's going to rain today so i went down to the garage last night to put the top up the pants i had on didn't have any pockets so i left the fob on the roof of my other car. after putting the roof up i tried to get out but the door was locked and the unlock button wouldn't open it. so i just put the top back down and climbed out

True, but the person trying to get in would have to know about the manual release as opposed to just hitting the unlock button which is high on the door, labeled, and easily accessible. It certainly isn't a serious theft deterrent, but I was just pointing out that the sequence he went through is not abnormal for this type of locking system. Besides, his car's not silver, so who'd want to steal it anyway?
Yes,I can attest to the fact that the alarm does indeed go off when the lever is pulled and the door opens.Time goes into slow motion as you attempt to get out of the car(without scuffing the door panel!)and retrieve the fob only a precious few feet away.
