Default Stupid Questions

I know I'll be showing my inexperience here, but let's go for it, anyway. I'd appreciate any answers you may be able to provide:

1. Has production of the 2005 stopped in favor of revving up production of the 2006's?

2. I have seen that in this neck of the woods---Pittsburgh area---Corvette prices generally run in the upper $40 K range to low $50 K. (Not interested in a vert). Is there a general feel for how much prices will jump with the 2006 model?

I've read all about Z06's and again will show my rookie-ness here: what are the differences between the 2005 C6's and the 2006 Z06's? I've seen price tags for the Z06's reaching stratospheric proportions (mid to upper $60 K???). Is this where the Vette is going across the board next year---in other words, buy now or watch the price jump $15,000?

And GM says they are in trouble?

Appreciate any comments in advance.

MOst of your questions can be answered by perusing the board, but I'll swag the Z06 question. The others I can't say.

The Z06 is the performance model. This time around it is a much greater departure from the base C6 models than the C5 Z was from the C5.

In a nutshell
427ci motor giving 500hp/~500tq (i forget the final torque value)
Al frame
Dry sump oiling
6-piston front brakes with 6 individual brake pads (this is a significant improvement for track duty - trust me)
Different bodywork, including rear spoiler and front splitter
Wider tires (forget exact widths)

All in all a significant track oriented machine, hence the price. This price does not, nor will it, represent the base C6's price.

Thanks yellow. In a way, I was interested in reading about the Z06 and relieved that in essence, the C6 will still be around. We have America's worst roads, some of its worst weather and some of the country's worst traffic in the Pittsburgh region. Can't see why I'd want to torture a Z06 with any of those things.

I've spent days perusing the board here and get lost in so many other items of interest. Thought I'd just be direct. Still interested in knowing how prices of C6's may escalate, however.

There will probably be a small increase in the price for the base C6 (if any). The car is selling well, as you might notice that there is no employee price offered on the C6. Some places still have dealers charging well over MSRP, but those places are rare now. A small discount seems to be the norm.

Your best bet is to log onto www.chevrolet.com

if you go to the corvette area there is a whole little thing on the Z06 and also on the C6 that will answer most of your questions. You can also locate corvettes in your area that are already on the lots. You can click on the dealer inventory and look at the window stickers.

Good luck!

Thanks again for the comments. I've done a lot of research where the Vette is concerned and it looks like the clock is about to strike midnight where my original plan of owning a 2005 is concerned. That said, some of the talk about 2006's confused me (Z06 vs base C6) and gave me some heart palpitations.

Thanks again.

2006 C6 production starts September 8th. 2006 Z06 production starts July 25th.

There's still plenty of time to order a 2005 or grab one out of stock and enjoy it this summer. If not, we will soon be placing orders for the 2006s.

Dave, I am on you site every other day, watching your inventory and taking note of your specials. If I had to guess, I would probably look you up first if actually going through with the purchase was assured at this time. Like everyone else, I wish the pricetag was about $10 K cheaper, but oh well.

I will be in touch with you when I graduate from someone just kicking tires to someone with checkbook in hand.

Thanks.

It's been rumored that the C6 prices won't increase. If so, I'll be picking up an '06 "stripper" for $42.5K

There are no dumb questions, just dumb answers. Here are a few.

1. Has production of the 2005 stopped in favor of revving up production of the 2006's?
No. The last 2005 C6 will roll off the line September 8th.

2. I have seen that in this neck of the woods---Pittsburgh area---Corvette prices generally run in the upper $40 K range to low $50 K. (Not interested in a vert). Is there a general feel for how much prices will jump with the 2006 model?
GM is switching to "value pricing", lowering MSRP on most of its line, not Corvettes, however. There should be no base price increase for the 2006 C6, accessory package prices may increase slightly.

I've read all about Z06's and again will show my rookie-ness here: what are the differences between the 2005 C6's and the 2006 Z06's? I've seen price tags for the Z06's reaching stratospheric proportions (mid to upper $60 K???). The 2006 Z06 is a major upgrade from the ordinary C6 coupe and vert. Base price is $65,800, plus option packages. There's a much larger difference between the base C6 and the C6 Z06 than there was between a base C5 and C5 Z06. That justifies the large price increment. Base coupes and verts will still be available, in fact they'll be the vast majority of production as they always have been.

The major changes for the 2006 C6 coupe and vert are a smaller 3 spoke steering wheel, hidden XM antenna, and a 6 spd automatic option. The latter may or may not be a good thing. We'll have to wait and see. According to GM Powertrain, it'll have less performance 0-60 and in the 1/4 mile than the current auto, but it will improve fuel economy.

And GM says they are in trouble?
They are, but the Corvette is a bright spot in an otherwise dismal swamp.

That particular A6 listed was for the Caddy. It's possible that the C6 A6 could be geared differently.

I doubt it. Any way they can improve mileage will help their CAFE ratings.
