Need some input. Had my FSU card replaced last Thursday. No probs. Seems like my dealer did a good job with it (and didn't have to drop the transmission as everyone here advised - thanks!). But since then, any time I try to start my car when it hasn't been running for a few hours, the starter just fires, but the engine doesn't turn over. After a couple of seconds, I turn it off, hit start again, and it roars to life. If the car is turned off for just a short period of time (like when I filling it with gas), it had no problem.
Any ideas what may be wrong? Many thanks in advance!
A couple of points here, first off, if the starter is actually turning but not the engine as you indicate, then the solinoid is not engaging the flywheel, but when that happens it is a much different sound as the starter is free-wheeling.
I would say when you describe the starter "fires" the engine must be turning over but it may not be starting, is that possible?
My guess is that there is a fuel problem and it likely has something to do with the repair, call the dealer or take it back cause it ain't right.
Yeah, I was thinking of the 2 different scenarios you described, but I wasn't sure which of the 2 it might be. I'm not sure how to tell...
Crank no start sounds just like ordinary cranking, but the motor doesn't start. But crank with no engagement is just a high pitched whirr as the starter motor spins but the engine doesn't. The latter indicates a problem with the starter bendix, the former is probably a fuel system problem.
One other possibility would be the soloniod firing without the starter motor turning the starter gear (bendix), this would result in more of a clack sound instead of a whirring noise.
If you could give us a more detailed description of the sound being made, it would give us more info to better diagnose your problem better.
This could turn out to be fun: click clack whir varoom.
It's more of a whirring sound. It really sounds like the first second of a normal start as the starter runs, then the engine starts. But instead, the starter just runs for a few seconds (before I shut it off). Then when I hit start a 2nd time, everything works like normal. Very weird...
From your description, I would say you're hearing the starter motor turning without the solinoid pushing the starter gear onto the flywheel.
The problem is probably in the starter. You should see if you can reproduce this for the service writer at your service department. It should be covered under the warranty.
You know if you read a few of these starter posts and didn't know you were on the c6 forum. You would swear this was a 60's revival "bendex dr,starters, etc.

It sounds to me like the fuel pump is loosing its prime, as long as its running all is fine, short stops don't give it enough time for the fuel to leak back into the tank BUT over time the fuel in the pump and fuel line drains
back into the tank. on the second attempt the pump has reprimed and all is well again until it leaks down again
Good Luck
