WHEN I DRIVE ABOUT 40 MILES OR SO AT HIGHWAY SPEED I NOTICE THE CONSOLE BY MY RIGHT THIGH GETS WARM. THE WARMEST AREA IS JUST BELOW THE KEY LOCK ON THE SIDE. i'VE BEEN TOLD THIS IS NORMAL. WHATS THE SCOOP. ALSO, IF I LEAVE A STARBUCKS ICE COFFEE IN THE CUP HOLDER IT'S WARM RATHER QUICKLY.

CAPS = yelling!
Its normal. The reason it gets warm is because the exhaust pipes run underneath the tranny tunnel, and also the tranny is on the backside of the tunnel too.
Yep, most C6 6-spds do that. Some more, some less. My 6-spd got warm. My auto. doesn't. Aftermarket has a plate you can buy to put on the underside of the car - it will help.
I plan on doing it when I replace the exhaust, as the tunnel will be exposed at that time.
I got the Ceramic coated Stainless Steel Tunnel plate from Elite, and it works awesome. It makes such a difference, you won't believe it!! I'd put it on if/when you put on new exhaust, because you HAVE to take of the catback to get the tunnelplate in.
I drove 120 miles recently to a birthday party. I had a digital camera in the console storage area, and when I arrived the camera was so hot I thought I was going to burn my hand picking it up. Fortunately the camera still works. I have an A4.
Put on the ABS of steel from elite engineering. The heat reduction is significant but does not eliminate 100%. Did the stainless steel with cermic coating.

So, you have adequate access with just the exhaust removed (i.e. will be putting on Corsa Sport)...so you don't need to remove the H-pipe?
Why'd you the stainless rather than the 1/4 or 3/8 coated aluminum? Is the stainless better....I just don't understand the differences.

Interesting. So far I have not noticed this in my 6 spd. The weather has been so cool here so far this summer and perhaps the extra warmth was not noticed. We are planning a trip tomorrow and will check to see if the heat is noticable.
I was just going to add this thread. If I wear long pant's I didn't notice. On a trip this weekend, It was getting pretty warm on my right leg, just left of the shifter. I'm glad I now know what it was.
Thanks
Larry

You have to remove everything catback....so you do have to remove the H-pipe. You'll have to take it off anyway to get the new exhaust in. I got the SS plate, because it had the most significant heat reduction and was stiffer. They have graphs of how their plates perform on the website. Elite is a great company; they shipped quickly with no problems, and their customer service is awesome!
get the SS, my heat has been reduced a huge amount, I no longer have useless tubes of chap-stick, and my can of Coke stays cold in the cup holder....not boiling.

First off - I love Ice Coffee (especially Ice Lattes lately ) have to slow down on those EVERYDAY lately
I too have noticed the console heat while driving, especially on my leg and foot. I am going to do a tunnel insulation kit like we do for the C5 and see how it turns out..... it pretty much eliminates heat on the infamous C5 'Stove' console.

Aluminum is second only to copper as a heat conductor. It is virtually useless as a heat barrier. Stainless is a poor heat conductor by itself, add the ceramic coating and its ability to be a heat barrier becomes very high. Plus, of course, steel is stronger than aluminum, so the plate works better in its other purpose of strengthening the body too.
