Default Another A6 note....

I noticed that there is no 1:1 ratios on the new A6. This may not mean anything to someone who knows nothing about the workings of automatic transmissions, but to those that do.. it does.

Good point, what gear does one dyno the car (normally done in 4th in a manual or 3rd in the autos) in I wonder?

well it is kind of involved but.. I went to auto trans school years ago. Here's a short version. With a 1:1 ratio basicly everything in the trans is rotating as a group. (This is the equivalent of 3rd gear on the A4) That is the planetary gears not actually doing any work. With any reduction or mutiplacation of gearing, the planetaries are working. In the case of the A6 that is 100% of the time. In the 60's and into the seventies planetary failure was almost never heard of. With modern OD transmissions this occurs more often. Also a lugged engine (as in low speed in OD) is very hard on 3-4 clutches. For this reason I never used OD uless I am running 65 or more. Milage difference is only tenths. If trans life is a consideration........ Hope ths helps.

...So this is really a 7-speed with the 1:1 "disabled"? Confused?

No.... It is just designed with no gear ratios at 1:1. Without seeing the layout I don't know how they did it. I just wonder how it is really going to do in a real world situation. I can't draw any conclusions this early. If they only offer a 2.56 rear then first will be very slightly lower than an A4 with 3.15 rear and fourth wil be almost exactly the same as fourth in an A4 with 3.15 rear. In town driving that would be too high for me. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I posted these numbers elsewhere too.

2.56*x6L80E = [10.31, 6.05, 3.92, 2.95, 2.18, 1.71] (*expected axle with A6)
2.73*x4L65E = [ 8.35, 4.45, 2.73, 1.91] (*current std A4 axle)
3.15*x4L65E = [ 9.64, 5.13, 3.15, 2.21] (*current hi perf A4 axle)
3.42*xT56 = [ 9.10, 6.09, 4.45, 3.42, 2.53, 1.71] (*current M6 axle)

Actually the 0.7 differences it the two gears you mention are not very slight. However I would still prefer the 2.73 with the A6.

So then 3rd gear in the new A6 could be a fun one.

While it seems like a waste to go through all that labor to upgrade to mere 2.73s it does seem like they would make for an ideal gear for this new trans...the fact that 2.73 carriers are plentiful and cheap (in the used/ebay world) is just icing on the cake providing the carrier is still a direct bolt in with the new potentially longer trans/shorter torque tube etc.

Another question is will the aftermarket exhausts and x-pipes work with A6?
