Default Burnin' Oil at 3000 miles?

Anyone burning oil or having to add any? I just hit 3K and the oil was down to the lowest little hole on the dipstick, though I guess this is still in the "normal" range. Am I cool or near to catastrophic engine failure?

Some cars tend to burn a little more initially and then slow down. While your level is probably still under the "acceptable" limit, I'd keep and eye on it. If, after another 3000 miles you are still burning at that rate, then I would take it to service. If there is no sign of a leak, I would ask for an oil consumption test. Good luck!

How are you driving it ?
If you drive it like you stole it
It will burn oil and this is normal
It is a race engine after all!
But
Should not burn 2 quarts or more every 3k of normal driving ?

normal for a new engine to use a little. I'd change it, and keep it full instead of letting it get a qt low. It will use more when low because the condensates and blow by will be at a higher percentage. Keep it full and the undesireable contet stays at a low percentage.

I've driven a ton of new cars through their break in, ussually about 4 different ones a year for company travel. Most will take between 1/2 and 1 qt during that first 3,000. Then hardly anything after that.
When new, I like to keep a qt in the car and check it about every 1000 keeping it right to the full mark.

I wouldn't worry about 1 quart after 3000 miles and after that I wouldn't worry if I needed a quart every 5-6000 miles.

I burned a quart in 2700 miles. I had first oil change done at 1100 miles.

At 3,000 miles I had practically no oil usage. Just had it changed and will continue to watch the level closely though.

I'm interested in how your broke your car in. My C6 uses very little oil. first Oil change @ 1400. 3,050 on it now only a small top off required.

Your right to say its not normal! My car used 1/2 quart per 3k miles the first 2 oil changes but has not used a drop since the last oil change at 6k.I've got 7800 miles now and it hasn't moved a milimeter and I drive it hard.Time to call customer service and b!tch!

PS Damn I wish I had bought a Vert,

Mine's burned 7 quarts in 7000 miles. Had the oil changed at 6900 and the dealer said GM's policy is to look at oil burning issues after 6000 miles as they consider that a necessary break in period. Hmmm..

I noticed they added an oil additive on the invoice as part of the oil change.

I'm not too worried about rushing to fix the problem since it'll be under warranty for awhile.

I broke in the engine cautiously and changed the oil at 1100.
Why some engines burn more than others is caused by what factor?
Manufacturing tolerances?

This is interesting and I will keep an eye on it. I am surprised because my C4 never burned a drop, even after 267,000 miles.
